I’m very concerned about the declining literacy scores we’re seeing in NB classrooms. NB’s PISA scores were 34 to 36 points lower in math, science, and reading compared to the rest of Canada. While I’m glad to see that the Holt government rolled back some of the AI curriculum they had planned, encouraging AI in classrooms while cutting library jobs is a step in the wrong direction for literacy. Right now, we need to support students and teachers with the right resources in our classrooms to provide a high-quality, inclusive education for every student.

Je suis très préoccupée par la baisse des résultats en littératie que l’on constate dans les classes du Nouveau-Brunswick. Les résultats du Nouveau-Brunswick au PISA étaient inférieurs de 34 à 36 points à ceux du reste du Canada en mathématiques, en sciences et en lecture. Bien que je me réjouisse de voir que le gouvernement Holt a fait marche arrière sur une partie du programme d’enseignement de l’IA qu’il avait prévu, encourager l’IA dans les salles de classe tout en supprimant des postes dans les bibliothèques constitue un pas dans la mauvaise direction en matière de littératie. À l’heure actuelle, nous devons soutenir les élèves et les enseignant·e·s en leur fournissant les ressources adéquates dans nos salles de classe afin d’offrir une éducation inclusive et de grande qualité à chaque élève.

Last Friday, we shared our concerns about the government Holt’s plan to bring AI into New Brunswick classrooms.

Since then, more than 800 of you have signed our petition!

And the comment section on our post makes one thing clear: there are still lots of unanswered questions.

What exactly will students be learning? Will they be learning about AI, or using it to do their schoolwork? What tools will students and teachers be expected to use? How will teachers be trained and supported?

These are very important questions, and we need clear answers before we move forward. We’ll be asking for those answers when we're back in the Legislature.

Vendredi dernier, on vous parlait de nos inquiétudes concernant le plan du gouvernement Holt d’intégrer l’IA dans les salles de classe du Nouveau-Brunswick.

Depuis, plus de 800 personnes ont signé notre pétition!

Et une chose ressort clairement des commentaires sous notre publication : il y a encore beaucoup de questions sans réponse.

Qu’est-ce que les élèves vont apprendre, exactement? Est-ce qu’ils vont apprendre sur l’IA, ou l’utiliser pour faire leurs travaux? Quels outils les élèves et le personnel enseignant devront-ils utiliser? Comment les enseignants et enseignantes seront-ils formés et soutenus?

Ce sont des questions importantes et on a besoin de réponses claires avant d’aller plus loin. On va demander des réponses à ces questions.
