At PFY, we invest in ongoing training and professional development throughout the year to ensure our team continues to grow their skills, knowledge, and expertise.

Beyond standard certifications and first aid requirements, we focus on technical training and emerging research across our various program areas. Springtime brings a special focus on summer camp preparation and strengthening our in-house canoeing expertise.

Despite the cold and wet weather, three members of our team recently completed another canoe certification course. Congratulations to Tom, Lily, and Brit on this great accomplishment! 🛶

📸 Throwback Thursday: Meet Suzanne!

We’re back with another staff feature, shining a spotlight on one of the wonderful people who make PFY what it is.

Here are a few of Suzanne's favourite things:

🔸 Quote: “The best is yet to come.”
🔸 Book: The Thursday Murder Club series and The Salt Path series
🔸 Place: Happiest memories of homes we once had in Goathland and Egton Bridge on the North Yorkshire Moors and spending many hours rambling over the moors and riding the steam trains.
🔸 Part of the day: Tea at home or walking the dog through the woods ☕🐕
🔸 Food: Fish ’n’ chips and mushy peas
🔸 Hobby: Painting, DIY, knitting, crochet, gardening, walking, playing games, cooking, crafting
🔸 Music: Not really into music, played the usual recorder in the school recorder group, tried to learn the flute, plonked on the piano and try to play the accordion and play the guitar badly. As for listening to music, I like the oldies and will often listen to the pop music from the 1980’s/90’s. I do enjoy singing, which I do loudly but not always in tune, to worship songs at church.
🔸 Concert or Event: Standing on the cliffs above the harbour in Whitby on May 9th 1997 watching the replica of ‘The Endeavour’, the boat Captain Cook sailed in, arrive in the town. She sailed into the harbour with cannons firing, church bells ringing and escorted by many boats with thousands of people cheering on. Also, the 2004 Remembrance Day Parade in London, watching all the soldiers, veterans, and Queen Elizabeth II march down Whitehall and the moving ceremony where she laid the wreath of poppies at the Cenotaph.

Check back next month for more throwback fun with another member of our team.

Sport3 is a national program that helps youth build better conversations through sport. Using a unique gameplay approach, the focus isn’t on winning, but on fair play, gender equality, teamwork, and respect.

By combining fun, sport, and communication, Sport3 empowers young people to take responsibility for their actions and work together through talking, listening, and empathy before, during, and after each match.

As the school year comes to a close, Sport3 Festivals in Fredericton and Woodstock are bringing students together to celebrate their hard work, teamwork, and successful completion of the program. We’re proud to see hundreds of youth connecting, learning, and putting these important skills into action!

Supporting young people has never been the work of one person, one program, or one organization.

In our latest blog, we explore why partnerships matter when it comes to helping youth navigate complex challenges. From schools and healthcare providers to community partners, volunteers, donors, and families, meaningful support happens when people work together and keep youth at the center of every decision.

Because stronger connections create stronger outcomes.

Youth connected to the child welfare system often face significant barriers to employment and education, including limited work experience, lower confidence, and reduced access to supportive networks and opportunities.

At PFY, we believe that with individualized support, skill development, mentorship, and meaningful access to education and employment pathways, youth can build confidence, strengthen employability skills, and create brighter futures.

This school year, we delivered group programming in partnership with schools in Harvey, Fredericton, Oromocto, Nackawic, and Woodstock. We also provided one-on-one mentorship to more than 60 youth as they worked toward post-secondary education and employment goals.

Together, we’re helping young people build independence, wellbeing, and lasting connections to opportunity.

Welcome (back) to PFY, Ashley!

Ashley recently graduated from the UNB Saint John Social Work program, building on her earlier studies as a Social Work Technician at NBCC. She’s no stranger to PFY—having completed a previous placement with us—and we’re thrilled to welcome her back as a Program Coordinator and Social Worker.

Outside of work, you might find Ashley at an MMA event, enjoying outdoor concerts, spending time with friends, going for walks, or doing her best to make people smile and laugh.

We’re so happy to have you back, Ashley!

Mindful Kids is a powerful program that helps children explore mindfulness in ways that feel meaningful and accessible to them.

This year, we expanded our focus on younger learners by delivering ongoing programming in two local elementary schools. Throughout the program, students explored a variety of mindfulness techniques and learned to recognize which strategies work best for them.

Modules included mindful breathing, mindful movement, mindful emotions, mindful listening, mindful eating, mindful spaces, mindful music and beats, mindful doodles, mindfulness in nature, and more. Each activity encouraged students to slow down, stay present, and better understand their thoughts and feelings.

At the heart of Mindful Kids is the understanding that there is no “one size fits all” approach to wellbeing. By introducing children to a range of mindfulness practices, we empower them to discover the tools that best support their own mental health and wellness.

Welcome to PFY, Jackson!

Jackson is a first-year Master of Social Work student at St. Thomas University and holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. He is currently completing his placement with Partners for Youth, where he’s supporting youth programs and building on his experience working with young people.

Working alongside our team, Jackson helps create a supportive environment for youth engagement, applying his learning in real-world settings with a focus on helping youth feel supported and empowered.

Through his MSW journey, Jackson is committed to developing a relational, trust-based approach to social work—while deepening his understanding of how individual experiences are shaped by broader systems and structures.

We’re excited to have you on the team, Jackson, and to be part of your learning journey!
