Please join Fire Chief Dwayne Killingbeck in congratulating Assistant Deputy Chief (Retired) David McKinley on his induction into the New Brunswick Association of Fire Chiefs Hall of Flame.

The nomination letter read as follows:

The Fredericton Fire Department wishes to nominate Assistant Deputy Chief (Retired) David McKinley for induction into the New Brunswick Association of Fire Chiefs Hall of Flame.

ADC McKinley served 35 years with the Fredericton Fire Department, including as a chief officer from 2013 until his retirement in 2025.

In 2019, after being active in the New Brunswick Association of Fire Chiefs for several years, he was elected as second vice president. He was appointed and served on the National Advisory Council (NAC), representing the province of New Brunswick, and was later elected as first vice president. He became vice chair of the NAC in 2022.

ADC McKinley has been recognized by the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs with an Executive Chief Fire Officer (ECFO) designation for his level of competency as a chief officer in the Canadian fire service.

ADC McKinley participated in the Government Relations Week in Ottawa, meeting a number of senators and elected representatives, while lobbying on behalf of the Canadian Fire Service.

ADC McKinley can frequently be found throughout the province with his bagpipes at important events, both at the community level and at fire service events. ADC McKinley frequently travels to pipe at firefighter funerals, and at firefighter memorials, including the 9/11 memorial in Ottawa.

Regionally, ADC McKinley is widely respected for his leadership and contributions to hazardous materials responses and training programs and exercises.

Locally, ADC McKinley serves as the Fredericton Fire Department’s historian, carefully curating and preserving artifacts and information that reflect the proud history of the fire service in Fredericton. ADC McKinley is universally respected for his professional proficiency, his approachability, and his commitment to the values of a true firefighter.

Fredericton Fire Department Advances Wildfire Preparedness with Specialized Training
May 15, 2026

Members of the Fredericton Fire Department are participating this week in specialized wildland urban interface training to strengthen the city’s ability to respond to wildfire threats.

The “Responding to the Interface” training program provides firefighters and company officers with practical instruction in safety, command and control, and tactical decision-making when protecting structures exposed to wildfire. The training focuses on the unique conditions found where developed areas meet forests and natural landscapes and environments where fires can behave differently from typical structural incidents.

Delivered as a joint effort with national training partners, including the International Association of Fire Fighters, the program combines classroom learning with hands-on field exercises. The training builds on the Fredericton Fire Department’s existing capabilities and reflects an ongoing commitment to maintaining a high level of operational readiness.

“Wildfire risk is evolving, and we need to make sure our people are prepared for the environments they may face,” said Fire Chief Dwayne Killingbeck. “This training gives our firefighters the knowledge and confidence to operate safely and effectively in interface conditions, which are becoming more relevant for communities like Fredericton. It is part of a broader effort to ensure we are ready to protect our community.”

This work is part of a broader effort by the city to strengthen its approach to wildfire risk and preparedness. Fredericton is currently undertaking a wildfire risk assessment to support the development of a Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan, a FireSmart-aligned framework that will help guide how the City understands risk, prioritizes mitigation, and prepares for potential wildfire threats.

Departments across the organization have already begun advancing preparedness through targeted training, equipment readiness, and alignment with FireSmart Canada principles, which emphasize practical steps communities can take to reduce wildfire risk.

The city recognizes the support of Fredericton City Council in advancing this work and in prioritizing investments that strengthen community safety and resilience.

Together, these efforts ensure that Fredericton is taking a balanced approach to wildfire preparedness, combining immediate operational readiness with longer-term planning to reduce risk and protect the community.

🔥 Wildfire Community Preparedness Day – Let’s Get to Work!

This Saturday is Wildfire Community Preparedness Day, a national call to action for Canadians to reduce wildfire risk at home and in their neighbourhoods.

Your biggest opportunity to protect your property is within the Home Ignition Zone — the 30 metres around your home where simple actions can make a real difference.

Here’s where to focus:

✅ 0–1.5 metres (Immediate Zone)
Keep this area non-combustible
• Clear leaves, debris, and vegetation
• Use gravel, stone, or other non-combustible materials instead of wood and bark-based mulch
• Avoid shrubs or anything that can catch embers

✅ 1.5–10 metres (Intermediate Zone)
Reduce what can carry fire to your home
• Move firewood, patio furniture, and combustibles away
• Use fire-resistant plants and clean landscaping
• Keep this area tidy and well-spaced

✅ 10–30 metres (Extended Zone)
If your property extends into this zone, you can lower the intensity of fire near your home
• Remove dead branches, dry grass, and fallen debris
• Consider thinning trees and create spacing between them

These simple actions reduce how fire spreads and prevent embers from igniting your home, one of the leading causes of structure loss during wildfires.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Let's make it a neighbourhood effort! Wildfire resilience isn’t built alone. When neighbours take action together, it strengthens the entire community.

👉 Take time this weekend to:
• Clean up your yard
• Remove hazards close to your home
• Talk to your neighbours about working together

Small steps today lead to safer homes tomorrow.

04/23/2026

Assistant Deputy Chief Brent Brooks of the Fredericton Fire Department won the 2026 George D. Post Instructor of the Year award for his international leadership in high-rise firefighting tactics. He was honored for visiting hundreds of fire departments to train thousands of firefighters, providing his expertise entirely free of charge, to bridge the gap between fire science and field operations. This recognition is considered one of the most prestigious honors in the global fire service, marking the first time a Canadian has ever received the distinction.

The award is co-sponsored by Fire Engineering magazine and the International Society of Fire Service Instructors (ISFSI).

During the award presentation, ADC Brooks closed his remarks with the following:

“I want to use the last 30 Seconds to train. This stopwatch is not for competition. This stopwatch is for our survival, and their survival. We know exactly how long it takes for fire to grow. We know exactly how long it takes for smoke to spread, and we know exactly how long it takes for toxicity to kill an occupant. We also know exactly how much water it takes to extinguish a fire. We also know that there's no such thing called water damage when it comes from a firefighting hose during extinguishment. I want to thank the Fredericton Fire Department and Chief Killingbeck for your support. I believe in you and you believe in me. I also want to thank back to my inner circle. Look what you can accomplish in just 30 seconds. Thank You.”

Congratulations, ADC Brooks!
