🚒 DID YOU KNOW? | Which Trucks Respond?
In our last post, we talked about why you may see multiple fire trucks responding to the same emergency.
But what determines which trucks get sent?
The Fredericton Fire Department staffs five frontline apparatus with five crews across our city:
🚒 2 Aerial Trucks
🚒 2 Engines
🛟 1 Rescue
The response changes depending on the type of emergency:
🚑 Medical Calls
The apparatus assigned to that area responds — whether it’s an engine, aerial or rescue. When someone needs help, the closest appropriate crew and apparatus may not look like the fire truck you expected!
🚗 Motor Vehicle Collisions
The apparatus covering that area is dispatched along with Rescue 1 from York Street. Rescue 1 responds to collisions throughout the city because it carries specialized rescue and extrication equipment.
🚨 Fire Alarms
A typical response includes one aerial, one engine and Rescue 1, providing multiple crews and different capabilities should the alarm turn out to be an emergency.
🔥 Structure Fires
This is where you’ll see a much larger response. All five city crews respond, along with the Platoon Captain(incident commander). Each crew has an assignment and works as part of one coordinated operation.
🌊 Water Rescues
These require another specialized response. Rescue 1 responds to help locate and assess the emergency, while the York Street aerial crew transports Marine 1 to the water. On the Northside, the aerial crew brings the Special Operations Unit, and the Platoon Captain also responds.
So the next time you see several Fredericton fire trucks heading in the same direction, remember — they aren’t all bringing the same thing to the call.
Different apparatus carry different equipment, and their crews may have different assignments, but they share one goal: getting the right resources to the right place when they’re needed.
