❓Did You Know❓

Did you know that a single mature tree can absorb up to 48 lbs of CO₂ each year? And that BC's forests cover approximately 64% of the province? These vast forested landscapes play a critical role in supporting biodiversity, improving air quality, protecting watersheds, and storing carbon.

At ATCO, we recognize the importance of responsible forest stewardship. Our silviculture team works diligently to plan and implement reclamation efforts that support healthy, resilient forests. Every tree planted is an investment in the future, helping to restore forest ecosystems and ensure these valuable resources continue to benefit our environment and communities for generations to come.

There is wisdom to be found in nature and we are committed to sustaining it. 🌎🌱

Today is Clean Air Day in Canada 💙🌲

Since 1999, Clean Air Day has helped raise awareness about the importance of clean air for our health, our communities, and the environment. While Canada is known for its high air quality, air pollution continues to impact ecosystems, wildlife, and human health across the country.

Here at ATCO, we understand the important role healthy forests play in supporting clean air. Forests help absorb carbon, produce oxygen, and contribute to resilient ecosystems that benefit future generations. Through sustainable forestry practices and ongoing reforestation efforts, we're committed to helping protect these valuable natural resources.

How can you support cleaner air today?
🌱 Plant a tree or spend time caring for local green spaces
🚶 Walk, bike, carpool, or use public transportation when possible
🔌 Turn off unused appliances and reduce energy consumption
🌲 Spend time outdoors and learn more about the connection between healthy forests and clean air
📱 Check your local Air Quality Health Index and learn how air quality affects your community

For more info on how you can get involved, visit: https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/campaigns/canadian-environment-week/clean-air-day.html

Small actions can make a meaningful difference. Together, we can help support cleaner air, healthier forests, and stronger communities. 🌎💚

Sponsorship Highlight: Kaslo Logger Sports 2026 🌲🪓

ATCO is proud to support events that celebrate the history, skills, and communities connected to British Columbia's forestry industry.

This year, we were pleased to contribute to the 52nd annual Kaslo Logger Sports through the donation of two new bucking dummies used in the competition. For more than five decades, Kaslo Logger Sports has brought together competitors, families, volunteers, and spectators to showcase the traditions and talents that have helped shape the Kootenays.

Congratulations to the organizers, volunteers, sponsors, and competitors who made this year's event such a success. We're honoured to be a part of this longstanding Kootenay tradition.

This Canadian Environment Week, we're celebrating the landscapes that connect us and the responsibility we share in protecting them. 🌎🌲

Environmental stewardship is part of how we plan for the future. From supporting sustainable forestry practices and reforestation efforts to helping build resilient communities, we recognize that today's actions help shape tomorrow's environment.

How are you celebrating Canadian Environment Week?

Here are a few ways to get involved:
🌱 Explore a local park or trail, like Rossland's 100 Acre Woods
🌱 Learn about Indigenous knowledge and stewardship practices that have guided care for the land for thousands of years (Visit: https://parks.canada.ca/nature/science/autochtones-indigenous)
🌱 Discover practical ways to reduce pollution and protect local ecosystems
🌱 Learn about biodiversity conservation and what you can do to help protect vulnerable species

Whether it's spending time outdoors, learning something new, or taking action in your community, every effort helps support a healthier environment for future generations.

Together, we can help ensure Canada's forests, waterways, and natural spaces continue to thrive. 🌍💚

🌿 It’s National Learn About Composting Day! 🌎

Small habits can make a big impact and composting is one of the easiest ways to reduce waste while helping the environment thrive.

Nature already has the perfect recycling system. In forests, organic materials break down naturally and return nutrients to the soil to support new growth. Composting works the same way at home by transforming food scraps and yard waste into rich, healthy soil.

A few simple composting tips:
🥕 Collect fruit and vegetable scraps in a countertop container
🚫 Leave out meat, dairy, and greasy foods
🍁 Mix “greens” like food scraps with “browns” like dry leaves or shredded paper
💧 Keep your compost slightly moist and turn it regularly

At ATCO, these values guide the way we work every day. We repurpose wood residuals such as bark, chips, and sawdust to support soil health, landscaping products, and renewable energy solutions, helping ensure materials are put to good use instead of going to waste.

From your backyard compost bin to sustainable forestry practices, every step helps build a healthier future 🌲🌱

With B.C.’s mountain snowpack currently below normal and drought concerns increasing heading into summer, many homeowners and communities are looking at ways to build more resilient outdoor spaces.

Simple landscaping choices can help reduce water use and support healthier properties during dry conditions, including:
🌿 Using mulch to retain soil moisture
🌲 Choosing drought-tolerant native plants
💧 Installing efficient irrigation systems
🪵 Incorporating durable wood products into outdoor spaces and garden design

ATCO is proud to support sustainable building and landscaping solutions that help communities prepare for changing seasonal conditions.

We offer a variety of sustainable landscaping products. Head over to our landscaping supply site and check it out! ATCO Wood Products Retail Sales

🐝 Today is World Bee Day! 🌼

Bees may be small, but their impact on our environment is enormous. These essential pollinators support healthy ecosystems, forests, agriculture, and biodiversity, helping plants, trees, and crops thrive for future generations.

Protecting natural spaces means protecting the pollinators that depend on them. Sustainable forestry and responsible land management play an important role in creating healthy habitats where bees and other wildlife can flourish.

A few simple ways to support pollinators:
🌸 Plant native flowers and pollinator-friendly plants
🚫 Reduce pesticide use whenever possible
💧 Leave shallow water sources in your yard or garden
🌿 Preserve natural green spaces and biodiversity

At ATCO, sustainability means thinking long-term and supporting healthy landscapes, reducing waste, and helping ensure our natural resources continue to thrive for generations to come.

Every small action helps create a healthier environment for pollinators, forests, and communities alike 🌎🌲

🚂 Employee Spotlight: Alex Sharp 👋

Alex Sharp joined the NFTS Railway team as a Locomotive Engineer, bringing with him years of rail experience from across Canada. Originally from Quebec, Alex has lived and worked throughout much of the country, most recently in Jasper, Alberta.

Before joining NFTS, Alex spent 9 years with CN working as both a Conductor and Locomotive Engineer, building extensive knowledge and experience in railway operations. 🚆

From a young age, Alex has always enjoyed skiing 🎿 and biking 🚴 and had regularly visited the Kootenays over the years. When the opportunity came up to join the NFTS team, it was the perfect fit.

Since joining NFTS and ATCO, Alex has continued learning the operation while contributing to safe and efficient railway operations. If you see Alex around the mill or out in town, feel free to say hello and ask questions — as long as it’s safe to approach the crew. 👷‍♂️

We’re glad to have you on the team, Alex! 👏

On April 28th, ATCO brought together 135 contractors in Fruitvale for our annual woodlands training day 🌲

Attendees from across our operations, including foresters, harvesting crews, engineers, truck drivers, planters, and road maintenance staff, spent the morning refreshing their knowledge of our Health & Safety program 🦺 and Environmental Management Program 🌎. These sessions help ensure everyone is working safely, staying current, and upholding our commitment to environmental stewardship.

In the afternoon, participants completed S100 refresher training for wildfire response 🔥. Our forestry crews are often among the first on scene during wildfire season, and this training plays an important role in helping protect our communities and reduce wildfire risk.

Thank you to everyone who participated and continues to prioritize safety and responsible land management 👏
