As a small protected area in the heart of the Thousand Islands, Thousand Islands National Park works to promote sustainable recreation while protecting the land and wildlife that make

the area a popular tourist destination. The park is located in an area of rich biodiversity and is home to many species at risk. Thousand Islands National Park consists of several ecologically important mainland properties and more than 20 islands between Kingston and Brockville. The Visitor Centre at Mallorytown Landing provides an introduction to the park with a hiking trail, interpretive programs, exhibits, and activities for the whole family. The park is a key regional partner in encouraging sustainable lifestyles and in protecting the ecosystems of the Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve. The Biosphere Reserve, officially designated by the United Nations in 2002, recognizes the region as a place where people live, work, and enjoy a variety of economic and recreational activities based on respect for the environment. Lawrence Islands celebrated its centennial in 2004. The unique ecosystem of the park will be preserved as a legacy for the next century and beyond. 𓆈 A rock to you is a roof to them. 🏠Rocks used to stack cairns or build firepits can have a destructive impact. In Thousand Islands National Park, the flat rocks you see aren’t building blocks, they are vital shelter for species like the Five-Lined Skink, Ontario’s only lizard. Skinks use these rocks to regulate their body temperature, hide from predators, or shelter their eggs. Moving rocks or building unauthorized structures in a National Park is prohibited. Let’s keep these homes intact.

Be on the lookout; it’s nesting time for turtles!

🐢 If you find a turtle nest on your property, you can safeguard it from predators. Contact the park for a turtle nest protector or instructions on building one yourself. For assistance, email [email protected].

❗ If you find an injured turtle, call the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre at 705-741-5000 to be transferred to the nearest Turtle First Response Centre.

Did you know that May is Invasive Species Action Month? 🪳

Invasive species are non-native plants, animals, insects, and pathogens that threaten the balance of ecosystems. ⚖️🦠 Non-native species can drastically harm the environment, the economy, and human health. 🤒

Here are some common culprits that spread non-native species:
🪵 Burning and moving non-local firewood
🐕‍🦺 Pets and people wandering off trail 👣
🚤 Boats and inflatable floaties
🥾 Dirt-packed footwear, vehicles, clothes, and camping gear
🪱 Parasites within live fishing bait

Help prevent the spread of invasive species by cleaning debris off shoes and equipment, 🧼 staying on marked trails, burning local firewood, and leaving the live bait at home.

Happy World Turtle Day to all who shell-ebrate! 🐢🎉

Thousand Islands National Park is home to five fascinating turtle species, including the painted and snapping turtles pictured below. These turtles are key in shaping the ecosystem around them. 🌱

With nesting season upon us, 🪺 turtles will begin crossing roads in search of food, nesting sites, or mates.

Help keep these species at risk safe by slowing down and keeping your eyes 👀 peeled for turtles on the road, big and small.
