Brief History Of Smith & Stone

Founded by William Smith and "Benny" Stone. Benny Stone married Harrietta Wynston in 1917 and it was A.L. Wynston; Stone's father-in-law, who got Benny started in the electric devices business.

Smith gave up tailoring in 1914 to devote more time to Dominion Coal and Wood - a firm he founded.

In 1919 William Smith and Barnett Stone formed a partnership and purchased assets of a firm in Georgetown known as the Glass Gardens. The firm had been in poor financial shape and the business was purchased for a reasonable price. On May 7, 1919 the firm Smith and Stone Limited was incorporated with a Provincial Charter.

William Smith acted as President and Benny Stone as the Vice President - General Manager. Although Smith was known to visit the plant once or twice a year, Mr. Stone was very active in the day to day operations.
