Heading to the Coast Cultural Alliance Art Crawl this weekend? Keep the creativity going with a literary look behind the art world!

Art isn’t just what we see in galleries. It’s also the people, power dynamics, and hidden stories behind the work. Join us on November 18th for an author reading with local author Lisa Baldissera, celebrating her latest book, Dead Peasant.

Drawing on her decades of navigating the art world, Baldissera weaves writing conventions from the visual arts with the imaginative possibilities of magic realism and autofiction in this groundbreaking collection of short fiction.

The stories in Dead Peasant reveal the fraught circumstances and neglected emotions of an underclass who toil below the glossy economies of the international high-art world, including artists and art workers. Here, characters from across centuries are haunted by war, floods, and their parental histories. An auction-house worker vomits blueberries on an art-collecting oligarch. An aspiring curator converses with Lindsay Lohan about an exhibition of horse paintings before tragedy strikes. An archivist studies planet Earth from space, reflecting on tax havens and the embattled ecology.

Through these startling, affective, incisive, and fun stories, Baldissera chronicles the unique challenges of the art world and the damage it inflicts on those struggling to get by. Like the eviscerative work of Rachel Cusk and the dark humour of Miranda July, she satirizes the neoliberal double-speak of the ‘creative economy’ and its punyfiying forces, to ask, what is it, truly, that art can do now?

Is there a 9-12 year old in your life that enjoys playing D&D, consuming D&D content, or just wanting to see what all the fuss is about? They may want to try our Trick or Heist program this Saturday Oct 24th from 1:00 - 4:00 pm.

There are a few spots left to join Game Master (GM) Shannon for some Halloween roleplaying game fun!

Halloween is here, the mall packed with trick-or-treaters, and somewhere out there is the mother lode of candy. There’s just one small problem: you’re an actual monster.

Play as a classic Halloween monster desperately trying to blend in with the trick-or-treaters while you and your awful cohort scheme, sneak, scare, distract, and probably make some absolutely terrible decisions in pursuit of the ultimate sugary score.

Will you successfully pass as ordinary costumed kids? Will you pull off the perfect candy heist? Will everything go horribly wrong? Will someone eat the evidence? There’s only one way to find out!

This game uses a very simple, beginner-friendly rule set that encourages players to work together and requires no previous roleplaying game experience. GM Shannon will walk everyone through the basic rules before the game begins, and characters will be created as part of the session. For ages 9-12.

All you need is your imagination and a willingness to cause a little fictional Halloween mayhem. One six-sided die (D6) is to play and will be provided if needed.

Join us Oct 22nd from 2:00-3:00pm as Nora Ryan reads from her new book, Nell’s Quiet Revolution.

Set in 1970s Ireland, Nell’s Quiet Revolution takes the reader into the heart of a family’s life and one woman’s determined effort to change its trajectory.

Nell has lived a life of quiet domesticity since her marriage to Ted. As time goes on and their family keeps expanding, a deepening dissatisfaction takes over. He had promised her that it was going to be great, but she was starting to lose faith. The house is now too small, and it is getting harder to make ends meet. Things come to a head after the birth of their sixth child, a long-awaited daughter.

Nell sets out with determination, and a little subterfuge, to improve things. She gets a job, learns to drive and procures contraception. Little does she know that she will soon become a protagonist in a culture shift that is slowly starting to unfold. As the once unassailable hegemony of the Catholic Church is questioned and confronted, Nell, through acts of care and courage becomes part of a quiet but powerful revolution.

The novel explores themes of resilience, social change, faith, and the quiet strength of women working to improve their lives and those around them.

From Lhasa to Kathmandu: A Family Cycling Adventure by Rob Bennie

In 1998, Rob and Janet Bennie, with their sons John (13) and Ross (11), set out on a ride from Lhasa in Tibet to Kathmandu in Nepal along a section of the Silk Road. Against a backdrop of political upheaval and suffering from altitude sickness and oxygen deprivation, they cycled across the vast Tibetan Plateau, struggled up the high mountain passes, forded riverbeds, and navigated washed-out roads while sharing the route with yaks, pilgrims and the ever present and sometimes violent locals before an exhilarating 14,000 foot descent into the lush Nepali valley of Kathmandu. What began as a naïve but ambitious adventure led to lifelong memories forged in one of the world’s most remarkable landscapes.

Join us this Saturday at 1:00 pm as local Author Betty Baxter reads from her new book, Outspoken: A Journey from Olympic Athlete to Activist. Registration required.

An Olympian recounts her experiences as a young gay athlete and coach in the 70s and 80s, turning discrimination into celebration.

This personal memoir chronicles Baxter’s journey from a small-town prairie girl discovering her passion for sports, through the years of international success, including harsh coaches, excruciating training regimes and the inequities in the sports system, especially for a closeted gay athlete. After her abrupt dismissal, Baxter turned to activism, seeking equality for women, initiating a new coaching school and working for a healthy, visible LGBTQ+ community through the internationally recognized Gay Games.
