County of Frontenac

County of Frontenac Centrally located in the heart of Eastern Ontario, Frontenac is steeped in history. The union was formally dissolved on January 1, 1865.

We acknowledge and celebrate these traditional lands as a gathering place of the first peoples and their ancestors who are entrusted to care for mother earth since time immemorial. Originally proclaimed on July 16, 1792 as part of the newly-created Midland District, Frontenac was joined by neighboring Lennox and Addington counties, as one of the original nineteen counties in Upper Canada. Today, t

he County of Frontenac offers an exceptional quality of life to its 27,000 residents while providing businesses with strategic access to major markets in both Canada and the USA. Residents enjoy the advantages of a rural lifestyle, living, working and travelling in one of the most unique, pristine, natural areas in our province, yet benefit from the region’s proximity to a number of major urban centres. The County marked its 150th anniversary in 2015. Community events throughout the County commemorated the milestone all year long, and a three day showcase took place August 21-23 bringing the County together for a celebration of the Frontenacs’ past, present and future.

One initiative for positive change on mental and emotional health matters among emergency system partners is a new peer support animal pilot project for Frontenac Paramedics. Maverick is the Frontenac Paramedics Peer Support Dog. He and his person, Matt, attend Frontenac Paramedic bases to help break down barriers and stigma associated with mental health conversations and to encourage paramedics to speak freely and openly about what they may be going through. Maverick also sometimes attends public service events. He loves meeting people.

Matt, with Natalie Lewington who owns Kingstons Paws In Motion, worked together to bring the program to Frontenac Paramedics.

Effecting positive change on mental and emotional health matters in paramedicine is a complex, collaborative, and ongoing effort. It involves new policies in the workplace, new training for leaders, and new resources for paramedics and their families. It takes continuous learning, commitment, and growth. Perhaps most importantly, it involves guiding and supporting an evolution of the overall culture of paramedicine. Maverick is just one example of that work here at Frontenac Paramedics.
