In 1993 and again in 1998, Choristers were privileged to have composer-arranger Don Besig conduct two choral workshops in Goderich. Following his first visit, Don, assisted by Nancy Price, composed and dedicated a song for the Choristers - “Say It With A Song” - which has since become the Choristers’ signature piece. Both Nancy Price and the Robert Wood Choir from Welland attended the 1998 workshop. The Choristers have hosted a choral workshop with Prof. Victoria Meredith in 2010 and more recently with Prof. Rachel Rensink-Hoff, with members from at least 12 other local choirs.

“You don’t reach high notes by pushing harder; you reach them by coordinating better.”

Most singers assume the problem with high notes is strength — so they push, squeeze, and try to “force it out.” But that’s exactly what creates the tightness, cracks, and strain.

In reality, high notes are not a power issue. They are a coordination issue.

When breath support is unstable, the voice gets shaky.
When too much vocal weight is carried upward, the throat tightens.
When register balance isn’t developed, the voice feels like it hits a wall.

So the real question is not “Why can’t I hit that note?”
It’s “What part of my coordination is not yet working together?”

Because once breath, weight, and placement align… the same notes that once felt impossible start to feel natural.

Question for you:
What do you struggle with more when singing high notes — breaking, strain, or losing power?..✍🏽
