Fire Safety Starts Young! 🚒

On June 17 & 18, members of the Howick Township Fire Department had the opportunity to visit Howick Central and Howick Maples School to talk about fire safety.

Students learned valuable fire safety tips, including: The importance of knowing their home address. When and how to call 9-1-1. What firefighters do to help keep our community safe. A close-up look at one of our fire trucks and the equipment we use every day. & A hands-on smoke simulation walkthrough to practice staying low and getting out safely.

Thank you to the staff and students for welcoming us into your classrooms! We always enjoy helping build confidence and safety awareness in our youngest community members.

Remember: Knowing what to do before an emergency happens can make all the difference.

❤️🚒 Stay safe, Howick!

Throwback Thursday!

You may have seen copies of the Homecoming booklet around locally , but we wanted to share our entry online as well. Did you know prior to having it's own Fire Department, Howick was provided protection through agreements with Wingham, Listowel, Harriston, & Clifford?

42 years ago the Wingham Area Fire Department was formed - which included Howick , Turnberry, and Wingham. In 1987 the former public works building was renovated to become what is now known as the Howick Fire Station, with the renovations having been completed by the firefighters themselves. In 2009 the Wingham Area FD was dissolved and the Howick Township Fire Department was created.

We have come a long way from where we began, and we are so excited to celebrate Howicks 170th Homecoming milestone next weekend with you all! It is truly a celebration of the history that built us, the growth that continues to shape us, and the people who make it such a great place to live. Enjoy the celebrations, take in the memories, and most importantly - stay safe!

🚨 TEST IT TUESDAY 🚨

Did you know a working smoke alarm can cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half? Taking just a few seconds to test your alarms each month can make all the difference when every second counts.

Press the test button until the alarm sounds
Replace batteries if needed
Make sure you have smoke alarms on every level of your home
Never paint over or cover a smoke alarm

For households with someone who is deaf or hard of hearing, smoke alarms with strobe lights and vibrating pads are available for added safety.

A small monthly habit could save a life

CAMPING & TRAILER FIRE SAFETY REMINDER 🚨

Nothing beats relaxing at the campground , but safety should always come along for the trip!

Before you settle in for the weekend, make sure your trailer or camper is prepared:

• Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms before every trip
• Replace alarm batteries regularly and replace alarms every 10 years
• Keep a working fire extinguisher inside your trailer and know how to use it
• Never leave campfires, BBQs, or cooking unattended
• Keep propane tanks and connections in good condition and check for leaks
• Make sure exits and windows are clear and easy to open in an emergency
• Don’t overload electrical outlets or extension cords
• Turn off heaters, stovetops, and appliances before leaving or going to bed
• Keep matches and lighters away from children
• Have an escape plan and make sure everyone knows it

A few simple precautions can help ensure your camping memories stay safe and enjoyable all season long. ☀️

GRILLING SAFETY

Warmer weather means barbecue season is here - but it’s also one of the busiest times of year for grill fires. A few simple safety steps can help keep your family, home, and guests safe while enjoying the grill.

Keep your grill at least 3 feet away from siding, railings, decks, and anything that can burn
Never leave a grill unattended while cooking
Clean grease and fat buildup regularly
Check propane tanks and connections for leaks before use
Keep kids and pets away from the grilling area
Always keep a water source or fire extinguisher nearby

Most grill fires happen during the spring and summer months , let’s work together to keep backyard BBQs safe and enjoyable for everyone. ☀️🔥
