‼️NOTICE FROM MANITOBA HYDRO‼️
Manitoba Hydro is planning to operate the Grand Rapids Generating Station (GRGS) spillway beginning on Friday, July 10, 2026. The significant amount of precipitation across western portions of the Saskatchewan River watershed has increased inflow projections. Cedar Lake water levels are currently near the maximum licensed elevation of 256.6 metres (842 feet)
Extreme caution is advised in and around the Grand Rapids Generating Station Spillway Channel. Once spill operations begin, the station is expected to maintain spill conditions for several weeks.
Manitoba Hydro advises residents of Grand Rapids, Misipawistik Cree Nation, Easterville, Chemawawin Cree Nation, commercial fishers, recreational users, camp owners, and visitors to stay clear of the spillway channel and surrounding area.
Any changes to the anticipated spill schedule or other pertinent information will be communicated to affected communities, and the public as it becomes available.
Why Is the Spillway Being Opened?
The spillway operation is required to safely manage water levels on Cedar Lake during
periods of high inflow and to ensure the generating station continues to operate within its licensed water level limits.
As a result, Manitoba Hydro has moved to full gate operation at all three available
generating units at Grand Rapids Generating Station to maximize water passage through the station and help draw down water levels on Cedar Lake. Manitoba Hydro continues to closely monitor weather conditions, inflows, and water level forecasts however, there remains considerable uncertainty.
Important Safety Information
Stay out of the spillway channel and surrounding area.
Water levels and flows may increase rapidly once spill operations begin. The spillway
channel has steep banks, and rising water conditions can create serious safety hazards.
Manitoba Hydro asks everyone to:
• Avoid entering the spillway channel.
• Keep boats away from the spillway outflow area.
• Stay clear of shoreline areas where water levels may change unexpectedly.
• Supervise children and pets near waterways.
• Follow all posted signs and safety instructions.
Debris and River Conditions
When spill operations begin, debris that has accumulated in the spillway channel may be carried downstream. Manitoba Hydro and local partners will monitor conditions and undertake debris retrieval activities where practical.
