Food insecurity is not always visible. It can look like a parent stretching groceries to make it through the week, a senior choosing carefully at the checkout, a student coming to school hungry, or a working household doing everything right and still feeling the pressure of rising costs.
In the 2023 Food Access & Affordability Survey, 2,188 Grande Prairie and area residents shared their experience. The results were clear: 57.49% of respondents said food was expensive or very expensive, 19.13% often had trouble affording food, and another 38.76% occasionally had trouble affording food. Residents rated our community’s food security at 4.8 out of 10, showing there was already important work to do locally.
Since 2023, food insecurity has continued to increase across Alberta and Canada. Recent national data shows Alberta had the highest provincial food insecurity rate in 2024, with 30.9% of people living in food-insecure households.
This is why local care matters. Through fundraising, events, workplace campaigns, Business 365, and community partnerships, United Way Alberta Northwest helps connect people and businesses who want to give back with local needs that matter.
If your business, workplace, or family has been looking for a way to help, we would love to connect with you.
