Today, the City of Grande Prairie hosted the Grande Prairie Police Service Transition Ceremony, recognizing the people, partnerships and years of work that have brought us to this historic moment.

Thank you to Deputy Premier and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis, RCMP leaders and members of the transition teams, the Grande Prairie Police Commission, Chief Dwayne Lakusta and all members of the Grande Prairie Police Service for their dedication and collaboration throughout this transition.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to the RCMP members who have served Grande Prairie over the years and contributed to the safety and well-being of our community.

As we look ahead, this milestone represents an investment in our city's future, with a locally governed police service that will grow alongside Grande Prairie and the people who call it home.

Today marks a significant milestone for Grande Prairie as the Grande Prairie Police Service officially becomes our city's police service of jurisdiction.

This historic transition reflects years of planning, collaboration and a shared commitment to public safety in our community.

We are grateful to the Government of Alberta and Deputy Premier and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services, Mike Ellis, for fulfilling the province’s funding commitment with a final $2 million contribution to our police transition, and for their continued support of Grande Prairie’s success.

The Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS) officially assumed responsibility for policing within the City of Grande Prairie today, becoming the police of jurisdiction and completing the transition to a municipal police service two years ahead of schedule.

Beginning today, GPPS officers will respond to all police calls within city limits. Policing services continue without interruption, and residents should continue using 9-1-1 for emergencies and 780-830-5700 for non-emergency police matters.

Police call-taking and dispatch services are now provided through the City of Grande Prairie's Public Safety Communications Centre (PSCC). As part of GPPS' tiered public safety model, dispatchers coordinate responses involving police, Grande Prairie Enforcement Services, and Mobile Outreach to help ensure the right team responds at the right time.

"This transition reflects years of planning, collaboration, and commitment from many people and organizations. We are proud to welcome the Grande Prairie Police Service as our police service, marking a new chapter in public safety built on local oversight, strong community partnerships, and a shared commitment to keeping Grande Prairie safe."

Since 2024, GPPS officers have worked alongside the Grande Prairie RCMP while preparing to assume responsibility for municipal policing. During that time, the service recruited and trained officers and civilian staff, developed policies and procedures, expanded operational capabilities, built partnerships, and established the systems necessary to support a municipal police service. Today, GPPS assumes responsibility for policing in Grande Prairie with a team of experienced officers and civilian professionals dedicated exclusively to serving the community.

🌳 386 new trees were planted this year in parks, boulevards and public spaces across Grande Prairie.

🌱 Supported by City funding and a $222,000 federal grant through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the project helps grow a healthier urban forest, providing shade, cleaner air and environmental benefits for years to come.

The funding also supported the purchase of a water truck to help care for our growing urban forest and give new trees a healthy start.
