Most fires caused by discarded smoking materials start outdoors, where there is no smoke alarm or early warning. 🚬🔥

A cigarette thrown into dry grass, mulch, planters or near buildings can smolder unnoticed before flames spread through decks, siding, soffits and attic spaces.

By the time fire is visible, it may already be spreading to neighboring homes and properties.
Dry conditions mean fires can start fast and spread even faster.

Dispose of smoking materials properly every time:
• Use a metal or ceramic container.
• Add sand or water.
• Never use planters, lawns or mulch beds as ashtrays.
• Never throw ci******es out vehicle windows.

Planters, lawns and garbage cans can all become ignition sources. ❌🚬

Potting soil and mulch can smolder unnoticed for hours before flames appear. Dry grass can ignite and spread quickly. Garbage cans may contain paper, cardboard or other combustible materials that allow fire to grow fast.

A discarded cigarette is not harmless litter. It can become a wildfire or structure fire in minutes.

The Grande Prairie Fire Department is urging residents to take extra care when disposing of smoking materials following a recent rise in human-caused fires across the community. In nearly all recent incidents, improperly discarded smoking materials are suspected or confirmed to be the cause. 🚬🔥

Over the last 48 hours alone, firefighters responded to four separate fires.

While no injuries have been reported, multiple residents have been displaced and property losses have reached into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

With current fire conditions remaining very high to extreme, residents are reminded to never toss smoking materials into grass, planters or garbage cans and to always fully extinguish them properly.

There are no fire alarms outdoors, meaning fires can grow quickly before they are discovered.

As we head into the long weekend, dry conditions across the region have increased both wildfire and structure fire risk. 🚬🔥

A discarded cigarette thrown into dry grass, mulch, planters or near buildings can ignite quickly and spread in minutes.

Most of these fires start outside, where there is no smoke alarm or early warning. Fire can move fast through grass, decks, siding and attic spaces, putting neighboring homes and properties at risk.

While you’re spending time outdoors this weekend, make sure smoking materials are fully extinguished and disposed of properly every time:
• Use a metal or ceramic container.
• Add sand or water.
• Never use planters, lawns or mulch beds as ashtrays.
• Never throw ci******es out vehicle windows.

Put it out. All the way.

🔥 We’re taking a look back at Camp F.I.R.E. with a recap of each day.

Camp F.I.R.E., presented with support from our Official Safety Sponsor, Brogan Fire & Safety - Grande Prairie , began last weekend with 15 participants joining us for a full weekend of hands-on learning with our team.

On Day 1, we welcomed campers as they met the instructors and spent time getting familiar with the gear they would be using throughout the weekend. For many, it was their first time wearing full bunker gear 👩‍🚒, learning how it fits and functions before the training began.

Campers were supported through sponsorship from Aquatera Utilities Inc. the Grande Prairie Firefighters Charitable Foundation, IAFF Local 2770, Pembina Pipeline Corporation and VIGOR Community Fitness.

Thank you to Cozy Pierogi for providing dinner.

On Tuesday, our team was proud to take part in a multi-agency mass casualty training exercise at Northwestern Polytechnic.

Working alongside students and emergency response partners from across the region, crews moved through a realistic scenario that put their skills to the test in a fast-paced environment.

These training opportunities are an important part of how we prepare for complex emergencies and continue building strong working relationships with our partners.

Thank you to Northwestern Polytechnic and everyone involved for bringing this exercise together to better support the community.
