The sun always sets.
Even on the days when the sky is heavy with clouds and we can’t see it happening, somewhere beyond what is visible to us, the sun is still making its way toward the horizon.
There’s something comforting in that.
Some days are simply hard. Not every difficult day needs to be transformed into a productive one. Not every feeling needs to be understood, fixed, or turned into a lesson before we’re allowed to rest.
Sometimes, self-compassion looks like making your world a little smaller.
Cancel what can be cancelled.
Lower the expectations.
Put on the familiar sweater.
Make the food you know you like.
Watch the show you’ve already seen three times.
Dim the lights.
Wrap yourself in a blanket.
Spend time with the people—or animals—who feel safe and familiar.
Let yourself exist within a smaller radius for a while.
There will be days for stretching, exploring, accomplishing, and reaching outward. But on difficult days, perhaps the invitation is simply to create enough softness around yourself to make it through the day without demanding more from yourself than you have to give.
And then evening comes.
The sun sets whether we witness its beauty or whether the clouds obscure the entire thing. The day still reaches its ending.
Tomorrow will bring another horizon.
For tonight, maybe it is enough to let this day end.
