The Laurentian University Mine Rescue Team is heading out to Colorado tomorrow to compete internationally in the Mine Emergency Rescue Development Competition (M**D) hosted by the Colorado School of Mines!

After months of 6 am training sessions and countless hours of work from our team and coaches, LUMR is ready to showcase our skills in the underground challenge, First Aid competition, and Technician challenge.

This year’s team consists of (back, right to left) Daniel McCormick (Captain), Quinn Roos (2 Man & Technician), Camryn Dunn (3 Ma’am), Pascal Gervais (4 Man), Félix Gervais (Vice-Captain), Luis Urena Tejada (6 Man & Technician) and (front, left to right) Aiden Alloy (First Aid), Calvin Rapin (Briefing Officer), Matthew Guerra (Incident Command).

The team will post updates on our story as the week progresses, so follow along to see how the team’s doing throughout the competition!

Vale has contributed a lot to the Laurentian University Mine Rescue club, including mentorship and donations. In Sudbury, Vale operates one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world, including five mines, a mill, a smelter, and a refinery. The Sudbury operations produce some of the highest purity nickel in the world, as well as copper, cobalt, platinum group metals, gold, and silver. KGHM is one of the largest and most important mining companies in the world. They own a number of assets in the Sudbury Basin, including the McCreedy West underground mine, where they extract high quality copper and nickel ore. KGHM is also currently developing the Victoria Project, which will be the newest and most high tech underground mine in Sudbury. With the development of the Victoria Project, many great opportunities for students are available!
