Labour Day has its roots in an 1872 printers’ strike in Toronto. Fighting for a nine-hour work day, for 6 days per week, the strikers’ victory was a major milestone in the changing relations between Canadian workers and their government.

Imagine, workers fighting for a nine hour, six day work week. We owe much to our predecessors and the JHS sincerely thanks our unions and labourers and teachers and office workers and absolutely everyone who has a job for their ongoing support to the JHS.

Every August 31, International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) brings a global community together to take action on overdose.

For 25 years, International Overdose Awareness Day has brought people together to remember those we’ve lost and to take action to save lives. The truth is, we shouldn’t still need this day. But we do.

Overdose continues to affect every community. Yet it can be prevented. We know how to reduce risk and keep people safe.

The Crosses for Change in our community are a constant recognition that drug overdose cannot be hidden or swept under the carpet. By speaking openly, learning from one another, and treating each other with care and respect, we build a world where fewer lives are lost.

Sudbury organizers and health advocates find themselves using the annual observance to confront a toxic drug crisis that affects the region at rates far exceeding the provincial average.

The day aims to serve both as a public moment of grief and a platform to fight stigma and will begin with an Awareness Walk, starting at 11:30 a.m. in the York Street parking lot across from Bell Park. The walk will head to the White Crosses at Paris and Brady Streets for approximately 12:15 p.m.

At 1:00 p.m., attendees are invited to gather in Memorial Park for a “Speaker Jam and Open Mic” featuring parents, advocates, and community members with lived experience.

United Way Centraide North East Ontario/ Nord-est de l'Ontario is bringing together schools, community organizations and local service providers for the Ready for School Resource Fair, a free community event designed to connect families with the resources they need for a successful school year.

The event will take place Aug. 13 from 4–7 p.m. in centre court at the New Sudbury Shopping Centre. The event is open to all parents, guardians, caregivers and children.

“Every child deserves the opportunity to start the school year feeling confident and ready to learn,” said Cory Roslyn, executive director at United Way Centraide North East Ontario.

As deaths inside Ontario’s provincial correctional facilities reach record highs, local organizations marked Prisoners’ Justice Day on Aug. 10. Confronting what they called a dangerous shift in corrections, one they say increasingly trades community-based health supports for overcrowded cells and tough-on-crime rhetoric.

Quoting the research, CEO of the John Howard Society, Sara-Jane Berghammer said that since 2000, more than half of prison deaths nationwide have resulted from unnatural causes — including preventable overdoses, su***des and untreated medical conditions — with the average age of death being just 44.5 years old.

James Sitko, who lives with epilepsy and postictal psychosis — a temporary psychiatric condition following grand mal seizures — shared his personal experience with the justice system.

New statistics indicating crime has dropped almost everywhere in Canada show the Liberal government’s three tough-on-crime bills were not based on facts, one advocate says.

“They’re lacking the evidentiary base to establish that what they’re trying to correct is, in fact, a serious problem,” said Catherine Latimer, executive director of the John Howard Society of Canada.

“They’re also lacking the evidence to suggest that the measures that they’re adopting would do anything to actually increase public safety in the long run. And that’s a problem.”
