Nelles Manor Museum

Nelles Manor Museum Nelles Manor Museum is a 1798 heritage home and War of 1812 battlefield site. Our Story:
Nelles Manor is a historical gem in the heart of Grimsby and Niagara.

It is rare piece of Canadian heritage. A family home for over two centuries, the Manor has been often viewed from afar. In 2016, owners and restorers the Coutts generously donated their home and grounds, to the people of Grimsby and Ontario as Nelles Manor Museum. An independent charitable, non-profit corporation - Nelles Manor Heritage House - was created to oversee it. In 2026 we are celebrating

our 10th anniversary! Nelles Manor Museum is open to visitors through tours and many heritage and cultural events. The Nelles name is familiar to those who live in the Grimsby area, as they were one of the founding families to settle in this part of Upper Canada during the late 18th century. Colonel Robert Nelles built this gorgeous Georgian-style home and resided there with his large family until his death in 1842. The house has passed through four successive generations of Nelles descendants, and remains standing today as a testament to Robert's wisdom and perseverance through an ambitious colonial beginning. The rest of the story is told by the house itself... you'll have to come visit in person and see what it has to offer. Our admission is by donation. Friends of Nelles Manor - FREE
Museum of Niagara Association members - FREE. We also offer educational tours, special events, and facility rentals for any occasion.

4th Lincoln Regiment Militia Colours
On Saturday June 14 Nelles Manor Museum received a wonderful surprise gift of the 4th Lincoln Regiment Militia Colours and King Colours flag. Heritage military advisor and volunteer Tim Warnick donated these handmade and hand painted reproductions made in silk, that are now in our drawing room.
“These colours are presented under a fixed conviction that you will do honour to them on every occasion and should you again be called upon to defend your country from an invading foe, may your united endeavours as heretofore be crowned with success by the God of justice, and may these banners, sanctified by divine benediction, remain unsullied as symbols of your loyalty to succeeding generations.”
These are the words of Robert Nelles’ 15 year old daughter Elizabeth when she and her cousin presented the original 4th Lincoln Regiments colours and Kings colours to the regiment on behalf of her father on June 4, 1818, at the War of 1812 Victory Ball parade in Grimsby.
Nelles family members Lori Bruni and Melodie Dysart presented the flags and were joined by George Nelles as Lori read the above words and spoke about the Engagement at the Forty.

More than 200 years old, this 1811 lead based sundial has witnessed generations of Nelles family history. Originally used outdoors to tell time by the movement of the sun and its shadows, the sundial was brought inside the Manor in the mid 1800s and was repurposed to serve as a guest book. Visitors were invited to carve their names into the dial, leaving behind a lasting record that still exists today, opening a window into the past of the people who once walked through the Manor's doors. Come to the Nelles Manor Museum to see this remarkable artifact and discover more stories!

June is National Indigenous History Month.

Indigenous allies were crucial to British forces in the War of 1812.

For example, during the Battle of Queenston Heights, Teyoninhokarawen (John Norton), led an indigenous force over the escarpment and engaged the enemy, allowing for the recapture of the position.

Likewise, Tecumseh’s Confederacy included First Nations such as the Shawnee, Potawatomi, Ojibwa, Odawa, Delaware, Winnebago, Wyandot, and Kickapoo. The presence of these warriors was essential to the capture of Detroit in August of 1812.
Indigenous forces also played key roles in the capture of Fort Michilimackinac, the Battle of Beaver Dams, and many others.

You can learn more about the Indigenous role in the War of 1812 on your next visit to by exploring the museum exhibit in Blockhouse One.
