With over 2,900 members, the Guelph Wellington Seniors Association is one of the largest organizations of its kind in Canada. The GWSA partners with the City of Guelph in the operation of the Evergreen Seniors Community Centre, a state-of-the-art recreation facility. The GWSA also operates in other locations such as the West End Community Centre, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and in the not-too-dista

nt future, will be a key Partner with the City in the design and use of a new South End Community Centre. The GWSA makes available some 90 organized programs, activities and services throughout the year as well as special events and public interest forums.

Guelph Wellington Seniors Association

Over 20 years ago, the Rotary Club of Guelph recognized the need of facilities for a building to accommodate seniors for their leisure activities. Accordingly the Club in conjunction with the City of Guelph and the Guelph Wellington Seniors Association proceeded to plan for a centre. The Rotary, for its part, mainly with the efforts of three Rotarians, Dave Kennedy, Allen Whitworth and Don Bower spearheaded the venture. An agreement was made with the City of Guelph through the assistance of former mayors John Counsel and Joe Young that Rotary represented by Allen and Dave would raise from the community half of the $3,000,000 required for the project. Of the amount raised, $450,000 was contributed by the local Rotary Foundation which included an amount from the Estate of Rotarian and local businessman, Jack Skov of $350,000. The balance was made up by the community fund drive headed by Allen and together with City funds and other grants. The Evergreen Seniors Community Centre was officially opened on Wednesday, February 19th, 1992.

The original activity groups of the GWSA included the Christmas Variety Show, the Walking Club, the Travel Group, the Craft Group, Line Dancing, Billiards, Euchre and Cribbage. Two original activity groups that didn’t survived were Carpet Bowling and Sailing.

The GWSA is a not-for-profit corporation and a registered charity. The GWSA is an active participant in the Older Adult Centres Association of Ontario (OACAO), and a member of the Guelph Chamber of Commerce.
