Friday Family Feature 🏡💙

Meet Efrem, Fikadu and their family. Here is their story:

"Homeownership has been a very important and meaningful step for our family of five. It represents comfort, stability, safety, and a better future for my family. For many years, we hoped to have a place that we could truly call our own. Today, we feel proud and grateful to call Garafraxa our home and to be part of this welcoming community.

Our journey to homeownership was a positive and life-changing experience. Before moving into our current home, we lived in a two-bedroom home. With five family members, space was often limited and stressful. The children had to share rooms, making it difficult for everyone to have their own quiet, comfortable space. We made it work, but we always hoped for more space where our family could live comfortably.

One of the most exciting changes was moving from a two-bedroom home to a four-bedroom home. Now, each member of our family has more personal space, which has helped create a calmer and more peaceful home environment. The children are happier and more relaxed because they have room to sleep, study, and play. Having enough space has improved our family routines and strengthened our relationships with each other.

A very important part of our success was the support we received from my brother. He helped guide me through the Habitat for Humanity housing application process. The application process can be confusing and overwhelming, but his help, encouragement, and support gave me the confidence to continue. We are deeply thankful for his support and for the opportunity provided through the housing program, which helped make our dream of homeownership possible.

Since moving into our home, we feel happier, safer, and more secure. Our home gives us a stable place where we can grow together as a family, build special memories, and focus on our future goals. It has brought us peace of mind and a strong sense of pride. Having enough bedrooms and living space has made a very positive impact on our mental and emotional well-being.

Homeownership has taught us responsibility and long-term planning. We now understand the importance of maintaining our home and being active members of our community. We enjoy building relationships with our neighbours and contributing to making our neighbourhood a friendly and supportive place for families.

By sharing our story, we hope to encourage other families and show that homeownership is achievable with support, determination, and access to helpful housing programs. Our experience shows how important safe and stable housing is for families and communities.

We are very thankful for this opportunity and look forward to continuing to build a strong, safe, and happy future for our family in Garafraxa. Our home is more than just a place to live. It is where our family feels safe, supported, and hopeful about the future."

Congratulations on becoming Habitat Homeowners! 🏡🎉

Friday Family Feature 🏡💙

Meet Amy and her two children. Here is their story:

"After 17 years of marriage, albeit not always a happy one, my husband left the family with little
notice. Suddenly, my life changed. I was no longer a part of a dual-income family, instead, I was
a single mom to two teenagers. About a year after his departure, we had no choice but to sell
the family home - the only home my son had ever lived in. We have been in Wellington County -
specifically Fergus - since 2008. Our friends, our family, our jobs, our schools, our entire lives,
were here in Fergus.

The rental market in Fergus is not robust, and it is quite competitive. Finding a place that was
big enough for the three of us and accommodated our pets was difficult. The newer builds
and non rent controlled options I could find were daunting.

A family friend - who also happens to be a realtor - suggested that I reach out to Habitat for
Humanity, and lucky for me, they had homes located in Fergus that were just about ready for
occupancy. We decided to start the application. As the process takes time and our house had
already sold, I got a short-term rental for a few months in the interim. This was an unsettling
time for us. On one hand, everyone was grateful we were getting a fresh start, but on the other
hand, we did not yet have a permanent place to call home.

Now, six months after starting our application, we have moved into a home that I own, a home
that was affordable, and a home that left room in my budget for life. We feel a sense of pride
and accomplishment knowing that our hard-work paid off. We have had so much fun picking out all of our furniture and decorating our home to our liking, we picked up a few pieces from the ReStore, and are well on our way to making the place homey."

Congratulations, Amy, on becoming a Habitat Homeowner!🏡👏

Students building for students!🛠️

We were proud to partner once again with the Wellington Catholic District School Board on a hands-on skilled trades project that brought students from multiple schools together in a meaningful way. Over the past several days, carpentry students at Bishop Macdonell Catholic High School constructed the roof system that will be installed on a shipping container at St. Joseph Catholic School to provide additional storage space for the school.

The roof components were then transported to St. Joseph’s, where students from St. James Catholic High School joined the project team on-site to help complete the build. Tomorrow, the finished roof will be lifted into place by crane as the final touches continue on the container transformation.

This project is another example of what can happen when education, industry, and community partners work together to create real opportunities for students to explore the skilled trades in a practical and collaborative environment. We would also like to sincerely thank The Co-operators for sponsoring this initiative and supporting experiential learning opportunities for local students.

We value our strong relationship with WCDSB and remain committed to encouraging the next generation of skilled trades professionals as we continue working toward solutions for affordable housing and future community development. 🏠

Stay tuned for pictures of the completed project!
