The University of Guelph Campus Safety Office (CSO) was established in 1967 and is one of the longest serving campus policing services in the nation. The CSO is comprised of 3 divisions: Operations, Fire Prevention, and Emergency Management. Our service includes 4 Sergeants, 12 Special Constables, 4 Dispatchers, 2 Fire Prevention Officers, and Administrative and Management staff. There are current

ly four platoons that work a 12-hour rotating schedule providing continuous service to our campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Did you know that candles and incense are not permitted in residence? Take them off your packing list.

Before you pack any cooking appliances for your new residence, make sure they’re allowed! Cooking appliances are only permitted in areas with approved kitchen facilities. If you’ll be cooking for yourself this year for the first time, remember to practice kitchen safety by staying with your food, only cooking when alert, and keeping anything that burns at least three feet away from the stove.

Camping and cottage nights are for relaxing - not reacting

With peak season in full swing, campfires and BBQs are everywhere. But one unattended flame can spread fast in dry conditions.

Don’t leave it till it’s out:
✔ Pour water on it
✔ Stir it up to ensure no hidden embers
✔ Make sure it’s completely cool

Because the only thing that should be spreading this summer is good vibes.

When packing for your new residence room or off-campus house, make sure you choose electrical equipment with a recognized Canadian certification mark such as Underwriters Laboratories (ULC) or Canadian Standards Association (CSA).

Uncertified power bars and electrical equipment pose severe fire and shock hazards.

If you have a mini fridge in your residence room, or any heavy appliance off-campus, plug it directly into a wall outlet. Never use an extension cord or power bar.

Late summer heat can turn dry lawns, mulch, and yard debris into quick-burning fuel and even small sparks can cause major problems. Carelessly tossed smoking materials are still one of the top causes of preventable outdoor fires.

Before you walk away, take a second to do it right:
✔ Fully put it out (no smoke, no heat!)
✔ Use a proper ashtray
✔ Keep cigarette butts out of gardens, planters, and landscaping

Heading out for the weekend? Don’t let a simple packing mistake turn into a fire hazard. 🔋🚗 Power banks are high-energy devices that need extra care when you're on the move.

Your Quick Packing Checklist:

Carry-on only: Pack power banks in carry-on bags only—never in checked luggage.
Tape terminals: Prevent short circuits by taping over metal contacts or using individual plastic bags.
Avoid heat: Never leave power banks in direct sunlight or on a hot car dashboard.

Did you snag a "Prime" deal on a device? Check the label. 🛒🔥

Buying cheap, uncertified lithium-ion battery powered devices is a major fire hazard. ⚠️ Many third-party marketplace batteries lack the safety protections needed to prevent "thermal runaway" fires or explosions. 💣

Key Safety Checks:

Look for the Mark: Only use batteries with recognized Canadian certification marks: CSA, cUL, or cETL. ✅
The Price Test: If the price is significantly lower than the official market rate, it’s a red flag. 🚩
Check the Packaging: Typos or poor grammar on the box should alarm you. 📦✍️
Buy OEM: Purchase replacements directly from the original manufacturer to ensure quality. 🛡️

Protect your home—if it isn't certified, don't plug it in. 🏠

Heat is a battery killer.

Lithium-ion batteries in phones and power tools fail when they get too hot. Leaving them in direct sun on a deck or in a parked car causes the internal chemistry to break down, leading to swelling and fire risks.

Tools: Keep them in the shade on the job site.
Phones: Take them with you. A parked car is an oven.
Charging: If the device is hot, let it cool before plugging it in.

Grilling for dinner? Stay safe by choosing the right location for your BBQ.

Place the BBQ on a flat, level surface. Keep it at least 10 feet away from your home, other structures, and overhanging branches. Always ensure your BBQ is cooled off before covering or storing away.
