To all the mothers,

Something shifts in you when your baby arrives. It's in the way you hold them, in the way you begin to predict what they need, and when you begin to trust yourself a little more than you did the day before.

This is matrescence.

A steady blooming, rooted in generations of mothers who have carried, nurtured, and followed their instincts before you. You are stepping into a lineage of care, strength, and deep knowing that has always been here.

For 65 years, we have stood alongside mothers, listening, holding space, and offering support, rooted in the understanding that this knowledge has long been shared, carried, and passed from one mother to another.

And here you are, part of it now, carrying this forward in your own way, adding to a lineage that continues through you.

Happy Mother’s Day, with love.

Let’s talk about something that stresses a lot of new parents out… baby’s weight 💛

All babies lose some weight in the first 24 hours. If you received IV fluids during labour, your baby may lose even more, not because of feeding, but because the fluids make the birth weight look higher than it really is. So sometimes what looks like a big drop is just your baby settling into their true starting point.

Canadian research found that when the 24 hour weight is used as the baseline, more babies were exclusively breastfed in those early days.

Sometimes it’s not about fixing anything, it can be understanding what’s normal.

A recent opinion piece claims that formula is the “secret to marriage equality.”

That framing misses the point because breastfeeding is biological. And inequality is structural. Feeding at the breast does not create imbalance! Lack of social support does.

Equality in a partnership is defined by how labour is shared not by who feeds a baby or gives a bottle.
~Who protects rest.
~Who takes parental leave.
~Who manages the night wakings beyond feeding.
~Who cooks, cleans, schedules appointments.
~Who advocates for care.
~Who carries the invisible mental load.

Breastfeeding families do not need to dilute breastfeeding to achieve balance. They need systems that support them.

The real discussion is around:
• Inadequate parental leave
• Poor workplace protection
• Limited access to lactation support
• Postpartum mental health gaps
• Social isolation

When those gaps are addressed, families find their own rhythm. Formula is an important option. Every family deserves an informed choice. But positioning breastfeeding as an obstacle to equality shifts responsibility away from policy and onto mothers.

Equality won't be created by replacing breastmilk, but by reshaping the support in our communities.

If breastfeeding feels unpredictable, you aren't doing it wrong. On-demand feeding is normal, especially in the early weeks.

And while your baby may run a tight operation, you do not have to manage it alone.

Even on-demand businesses need backup!

Hockey moms bring all the gear; skates, tape, snacks.
And yes… built-in snacks.

Because when the game starts at 7 a.m. and the rink feels like Antarctica, baby still needs to eat.

Breastfeeding at the arena? Normal.
Feeding between periods? Normal.
Cheering with one arm and nursing with the other? Elite level multitasking.

To every hockey mom doing it all, we see you.
