Link Nova Scotia

Link Nova Scotia Planning a safe, equitable, and resilient regional transportation system for Halifax and surrounding communities.

05/25/2026

Link Nova Scotia and Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) are introducing adaptive signal technology at the following intersections:
- Nantucket Avenue at Victoria Road
- Nantucket Avenue at Zatzman Sportsplex
- Nantucket Avenue at Wyse Road/Macdonald Bridge
- North Street at Gottingen Street
- North Street at Agricola Street
- North Street at Robie Street
- North Street at Windsor Street
- North Street at Oxford Street

Adaptive traffic signals use sensors to make standard traffic signals smarter, detecting real-time traffic volumes and automatically adjusting the timing of the light. This is especially valuable for responding to differences in traffic flow, like during rush hour.

Collaborative projects like this are an early step toward a transportation system that is smarter, more informative and able to respond dynamically to road conditions, as recommended in Action 1.1.1 of the Regional Transportation Plan.

The Canadian Survey on Everyday Travel is underway. 🚌 🚢 πŸš— 🚲 πŸ§‘β€πŸ¦½

If you are selected, please participate! The survey is collected by Statistics Canada and will gather important insights that will guide transportation planning.

Here at Link Nova Scotia, one of the main ways we'll use this data is as a vital input to our travel demand model. Having a strong representative sample on who is travelling where, when, and how they are getting there ensures that the model can continue to provide accurate, evidence-based information.

Heads up - Halifax Harbour Bridges has issued a weekend closure notice for the Macdonald Bridge. Details below.

Macdonald Bridge Weekend Closure Notice!

As preparations begin for Phase 2 of Project LifeSpan (Link Nova Scotia), the Macdonald Bridge will be closed to all traffic from Friday, April 17th at 8PM until Monday, April 20th at 5:30AM.

⚠️ This closure includes vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.

If you typically walk or bike across, free transit tickets (up to four per person) are available at the Macdonald Bridge Administration Building (πŸ“125 Wyse Road) to help you get across the harbour by bus or ferry.

Motorists should plan ahead, expect delays, and allow extra travel time.

The MacKay Bridge will remain open!

Thank you for your patience as we continue this important work. πŸ”¨πŸš§

During engagement on the Regional Transportation Plan, we heard in every community we visited about the need for transit service that would connect rural communities to HRM and to one another, addressing access and affordability challenges.

Today, the province issued a request for information to gauge service provider interest and ability to operate an inter-municipal transit service.

Action 1.3.1 in the plan recommends regular daily service between key destinations in rural communities within the region and HRM. This service would provide a comfortable, reliable, and affordable transportation option, suitable for daily commuting.

Together with the future rapid transit network and continued investment in community transportation, these services form an integrated regional transit network.

The Canadian Survey on Everyday Travel is now underway. If you are selected, please participate! The survey is collected by Statistics Canada and aims to gather important insights to help make transportation better.

Here at Link Nova Scotia, this data will act as a vital input to our travel demand model. Co-owned with HRM, the model allows us to test transportation projects and their impact on the regional system without investment or construction, road closures, and detours.

Having a strong representative sample of data on who is travelling where, when, and how they are getting there ensures that the model can continue to provide accurate, evidence-based information.

How do you get from place to place each day? πŸš²β€¦πŸš—β€¦πŸšŒβ€¦πŸšΆβ€βž‘οΈ

A better understanding of your travel habits and needs, as well as barriers you may have encountered, will help to inform transportation planning and infrastructure investments in your community.

Following a public procurement process, CIMA Canada Inc (CIMA+) will work with Link Nova Scotia and Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) to examine core streets and access points on the Halifax Peninsula and identify strategies to optimize travel.

The Halifax Peninsula has the highest concentration of people, jobs, and services in Nova Scotia. Its unique geography means that it is very constrained, with limited ways on and off.

In collaboration with HRM, the review will use our co-owned activity-based travel demand model to provide recommendations on how to better move people and goods on these key corridors.

Using census and travel survey data, the tool simulates how, when and where people travel, and allows for the testing of transportation projects and their impact without investment or construction, road closures, and detours.

Action 1.1.3 in the Regional Transportation Plan identified the need to examine the function of core streets and access points on the peninsula.

Following a public procurement process, WSP in Canada has been awarded the contract to identify future corridor requirements and produce 30 per cent design work for Highway 102 between exits 0 (Bayers Road) and 4C (Highway 107) in Halifax Regional Municipality.

This is an important phase of work because it moves us from ideas to a real understanding of what an improved Highway 102 will look like and how it will function.

Until now, we’ve been focused on maintenance and minor improvements to this corridor. Over the next twelve months, Link Nova Scotia, Department of Public Works, and WSP in Canada will solidify how to transform this critical part of the transportation network.

One of the most frustrating parts of congestion is the unpredictability of the trip. Thanks to Halifax Harbour Bridges, there are now eleven signs in key areas of HRM that provide up-to-the-minute crossing information for the MacKay and Macdonald bridges.

Projects like this are an early step toward a transportation system that is smarter, more informative and able to respond dynamically to road conditions.

Implementation of a regional transportation management centre and supporting intelligent transportation systems is recommended under Action 1.1.1 in the Regional Transportation Plan.
