Period poverty isn't rare, it's a struggle many people in our community quietly deal with. People miss school, work, and make tough choices because they can't afford products most of us take for granted.

You can help change that. Donate unopened menstrual products throughout May at any of the 14 Halifax Public Libraries branches across HRM.

Nobody should feel embarrassed for needing a menstrual product. And yet many people with periods still face stigma or even bullying just for asking.

Silence and shame don't fix period poverty. Talking about it does. Donating does. Because when products are freely available, no one has to ask.

This Menstrual May, let's make it a little easier for someone in our community.

Donate unopened menstrual products at your nearest drop-off location or organize your own drive at your workplace!

Menstrual May is here, and we need your help! đź©·

Starting today May 6 until May 31, United Way Maritimes is running a menstrual product collection drive in partnership with United Way Cape Breton as part of our fight against period poverty across the Maritimes.

We're asking businesses and individuals to donate unopened menstrual products at drop-off locations near you. Every pad, tampon, and liner makes a real difference.

Donated products go directly to United Way-funded agencies and community organizations serving women, girls, transgender, and non-binary individuals in your community!

📍 Drop-off locations:
Halifax Public Libraries – all 14 branches across HRM

Whether you donate one box or organize a drive at your workplace, it all counts!

Today we are honoured to celebrate the life and legacy of Evelyn Barkhouse, a beloved friend and member of our United Way family.

Evelyn dedicated 40 years of her life to United Way — starting as a Campaign Secretary when donor records were still kept on index cards, and retiring in 2018 as Chief Operating Officer of United Way Halifax. It is no exaggeration to say she was foundational to who we are today.

Her impact extended far beyond Halifax. Evelyn chaired the national Rainbow Committee, the donor tracking system of its era, and trained most United Way staff across Canada on how to use it. She consistently earned praise from auditors for her clean financials, and she was a tireless bridge-builder, always making sure every United Way was supported and felt connected to the broader network.

But those who knew Evelyn knew her whole self just as well as her professional one. She was a generous baker and a lover of crafts — she handmade a Christmas ornament for every staff member, every single year, one United Way team member shared that she still hangs all 18 of hers up each Christmas!

Our deepest condolences to her partner Charles, and to all who loved and were impacted by her.

Today is International Women’s Day, and this year’s theme — Give to Gain — reminds us that advancing gender equality requires more than recognition. It requires action.

Across the Maritimes, organizations are working every day to support women and girls through programs that strengthen economic security, expand access to services, and create pathways to opportunity. Yet many of these organizations are facing increasing demand and uncertain funding.

Giving is one way we can help bridge that gap.

When we Give to Gain, we’re investing in stronger families, stronger communities, and a more equitable future for everyone.

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to mark International Women’s Day, consider making a gift today.

International Women’s Day is just around the corner, and this year’s theme - Give to Gain - invites us to move beyond symbolic support toward tangible actions that create real impact.

Right now, we’re in the midst of one of the greatest wealth transfers in history, with women inheriting and controlling more wealth than ever before. At the same time, many organizations working to advance gender equality are facing increasingly unstable funding, even as demand for their services continues to grow.

Give to Gain reminds us that real progress happens when support turns into action.

When we invest in women and girls, the impact extends far beyond individuals, it strengthens families, communities, and entire economies.

This International Women’s Day, consider how you can turn support into meaningful change.
