We’re coming together for a second Upper Hammonds Plains Community Clean-Up Day! 🧡

Why another cleanup? Because keeping our community clean and reducing potential wildfire hazards takes ongoing effort. Our first clean-up made a difference, but litter, debris, fallen branches and dry vegetation can continue to build up along our roadsides and ditches over time.

🔥 As part of our work toward becoming a FireSmart Canada Recognized Community, we’re continuing to take practical steps to reduce potential hazards. Keeping ditches and roadsides clear makes it easier to identify and remove dry vegetation and other materials that can become fuel for wildfire.

This second cleanup is about building on the work we started, not starting over. Every bag collected and every area cleared helps us care for Upper Hammonds Plains and keep our community better prepared.

This Spring we welcomed Claudia Chender and her team to our site. They walked the Upper Hammonds Plains Housing Co-operative as it goes up, met our team, and reviewed the plans for what comes next.

Upper Hammonds Plains is one of Nova Scotia’s 52 historic African Nova Scotian communities, rooted here since 1815. What we are building is permanently non-market and community-owned, held in trust so that it stays affordable for generations rather than for a funding cycle.

We have hosted elected officials from more than one party, and we will keep doing it. Our vision is community-led transformation at scale, and that vision is reached faster the more people understand how this model works.

Every partner at this table has made the next project more possible than the last. We are grateful for them, and we are always looking to build more of those relationships. We are ready to work with anyone who wants to see more of this built in Nova Scotia!

Have your say in the future of Upper Hammonds Plains!

The Upper Hammonds Plains Visioning Committee and Halifax Regional Municipality’s African Nova Scotian Community Action Program invite you to join us tonight for an important Community Engagement Session.

Come learn about the proposed planning concepts for the Little Pockwock and Emmanuel Baptist Church sites, ask questions, and share your feedback before draft policies are finalized and presented to Regional Council.

Your input matters and will help shape the future of Upper Hammonds Plains.

Upper Hammonds Plains Housing Co-operative is offering private, one-on-one appointments to help applicants complete the Phase 2 Co-Op Tenancy Application and upload the required documents.

Each appointment is 30 minutes. **Advance booking is required.**

Today was about more than a tour.

Our staff and summer students had the opportunity to visit Halifax Water’s J.D. Kline Water Supply Plant and see firsthand how water from Pockwock Lake is treated and supplied to communities across the Halifax region.

But for us, the most meaningful part of the day came when we went beyond the gates and visited Pockwock Lake itself.

For the community of Upper Hammonds Plains, those gates carry history.

In the 1970s, hundreds of acres of the historic lands were expropriated as part of the development of the Pockwock Water Supply System. That history made today's visit especially significant.

Giving our summer students the opportunity to stand on this land, learn its history, and see the infrastructure that exists there today was a powerful reminder that understanding our community also means understanding what was lost, what was fought for, and what previous generations experienced.

We are grateful to the Halifax Water team for welcoming us, taking the time to walk us through the facility and watershed, answering our questions, and sharing their knowledge with us.

It was a chance to connect infrastructure, land and history in a way that can't be learned from a textbook.

Yesterday, we unveiled a new community sign, with inspiration drawn from the one that proudly stood here before it. ❤️💛💚

The vibrant colours and patterns woven throughout the design celebrate the African Nova Scotian heritage, history and pride that have shaped Upper Hammonds Plains for generations.

More than a welcome sign, it’s a symbol of community, belonging and the deep roots that connect the people of Upper Hammonds Plains to this place and to one another.

We’re proud to see this meaningful landmark standing once again, welcoming residents and visitors while honouring the legacy of this historic community.
