in 1758, a proclamation issued by Governor Lawrence called for an election of representatives to sit in Nova Scotia's first General Assembly:

“That a House of Representatives of the Inhabitants of this Province, be the Civil Legislature thereof, in Conjunction with His Majesty’s Governor or Commander in Chief for the Time being, and His Majesty’s Council of the said Province.”

The first elected House would have 16 members for the Province at large, with four from Halifax and two from Lunenburg. It would be known as the General Assembly.

Happy Victoria Day! 👑

This portrait of Her Majesty Queen Victoria was commissioned by Premier George Henry Murray in 1897 to mark Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee.

Painted by A.T. Barrett of Gaspereau, Kings County, it has the distinction of being the first artwork by a Nova Scotian to be displayed at Province House.

Half masting - Our flags are at half-mast in remembrance of Harold "Junior" Elwood Theriault. A fisherman and businessman, he represented the constituency of Digby-Annapolis from 2003 to 2013.
