Throughout June, we recognize National Indigenous History Month, a time to learn about, reflect on, and celebrate the histories, cultures, languages, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

Across Nova Scotia, Indigenous communities have stewarded these lands and waters since time immemorial. Their knowledge, traditions, and perspectives continue to shape communities across the province.

This month is an opportunity to listen, learn, and deepen our understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, and ongoing contributions.

Learning from the past helps build a stronger future together.

Building spaces that work for everyone.

National AccessAbility Week highlights the role of accessibility in the design, construction, and operation of spaces across Nova Scotia.

Accessibility ensures that people can move through, take part in, and benefit from the spaces and services that shape daily life. It goes beyond compliance by removing barriers and supporting independence, dignity and inclusion. From public buildings to waterfront areas and community infrastructure, thoughtful design helps more people participate fully.

At Build Nova Scotia, accessibility is an important consideration across projects and planning from the start.

As a proud partner of the TD Halifax Jazz Festival, we’re excited to celebrate a major milestone as the festival marks its 40th event this July. 🎷🌊

For four decades, the festival has brought incredible music, energy, and culture to Halifax, growing from its beginnings in 1987 into one of the country’s most recognized music festivals. Each year, local, national, and international artists help transform the waterfront and surrounding venues into vibrant gathering spaces filled with unforgettable performances and shared experiences. ✨

We’re proud to support events that activate public spaces, strengthen community connections, and continue making the Halifax Waterfront a welcoming place for people to come together through music.

This past weekend on Halifax Harbour, Stephen Jeddry, owner of Tiki Tours, and one of his crew members demonstrated exceptional leadership and quick thinking by assisting two individuals after their personal watercraft capsized.

The team safely brought both individuals aboard, helped protect them from the effects of cold-water exposure, and ensured they and their personal watercraft returned safely to shore.

The crew at Tiki Tours' actions reflect the strong culture of safety that exists across the Halifax Waterfront and the importance of looking out for one another on and around the water.

Thank you to the Tiki Tours team for your quick actions and commitment to safety on the water.

Big moment on the Halifax Waterfront

The new Irving Shipbuilding Boat School is now open at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, creating a space for hands-on learning, skills development, and opportunities for underserved youth across Nova Scotia.

Build Nova Scotia worked with partners across government, industry, and the community to deliver this project, including wharf and pier upgrades, an accessible marina, and the new Boat School facility.

The space is designed for the future, with accessible features, climate resilience, and solar power, supporting young people as they build skills, confidence, and connections on and off the water.

As David Benoit, President and CEO of Build Nova Scotia, said, this project creates a place where life skills and opportunities take shape on and off the water, and helps guide future generations of skilled tradespeople while supporting youth in whatever path they choose.

This is what it looks like to build infrastructure that supports communities today and helps shape a stronger, more resilient future.
