Captain William Spry commanded the Royal Engineers in Halifax during the American Revolution, overseeing numerous military construction projects, including the second Citadel. In 1871, one hundred and thirty seven children and adults attended the Royal Artillery School in Halifax. A schoolmaster and schoolmistress ran two schoolrooms: in Royal Artillery Park and in the former hospital building. A library was also in RA Park, for rank and file, but membership was also available, for a fee, to officers of the Royal Artillery and Royal Navy.

Have you heard of the Grey Lady? 👰‍♀️

The most famous ghost to haunt the Halifax Citadel is the "White" or "Grey" lady of the Cavalier Building. Since the early 1900s, many people have reported seeing the apparition of a young woman wandering the veranda or the barrack rooms.

Take a candlelight ghost tour at Halifax Citadel National Historic Site and explore the shadows of this historic 19th century British fort.

Deep within the southwest wall of the Halifax Citadel lie two brick-lined rooms known as the Garrison Cells. These rooms were designed to house cannons, but they were also used as a prison.

One day in mid-summer, two visitors from New York followed what they thought was a costumed interpreter into the cells... but once inside the dark and gloomy rooms, the man vanished!

Fall afternoons look pretty good from the Parade Square. ☀️🍂 Grab a bite, sip something local and settle in at Parade Square Patio for a weekend afternoon surrounded by centuries of history. With good food, local drinks and one of the most unique patio settings in Halifax, it’s the perfect excuse to spend a little more time on the hill. During the American Revolution, Georges Island’s fortifications were quite different from the ones you see today. They consisted of a series of earthworks bustling with 48 cannons of different sizes. The island and its forts were reshaped and rebuilt numerous times throughout history, but its military purpose always remained the same – to defend Halifax Harbour from naval attacks.
