A little Halifax history came full circle yesterday. 🎶 Our 78th Highlanders Pipes & Drums were invited to perform at the Halifax Public Gardens, with the full band of six pipers and four drummers filling the bandstand with historic music from the 1869-1871 period.

And here’s what made it extra special: while the 78th Highland Regiment was stationed in Halifax from 1869 to 1871, we know their band performed at the Public Gardens too. More than 150 years later, the music returned to the bandstand. 👏

Thank you to the Halifax Public Gardens for inviting us to be part of such a special afternoon!

This view never gets old. 🌊 Captured around 1924, this picture shows the Halifax Harbour more than 100 years ago! While the skyline has grown and changed, generations of visitors have stood on this very hill to take in the same sweeping harbour views. Proof that some of Halifax’s best views really do stand the test of time. ⚓

Between 1778 and 1783, hundreds of German mercenaries (commonly referred to as Hessians) were stationed throughout Nova Scotia, including Halifax. Hired by the British Army, these auxiliary troops were tasked with defending many of the colony’s forts and settlements during the American Revolution.

Did you know? The British military helped ignite the popularity of the sport of Cricket in Halifax. In August 1873, the Royal Artillery faced the “Odds and Ends”, a new Halifax club, in a grudge match. The RA were essentially defeated in the first few innings, with a final score of 168 to 57. A rematch was called for the following Saturday.
