We’re all familiar with Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, but have you ever heard of New Ireland? On this day in 1779, a British force of eight ships and 640 soldiers set sail from Halifax with the goal of capturing parts of modern-day Maine from the American Rebels and establishing a Loyalist colony. The expedition was successful, and New Ireland would exist for four years until it was ceded to the United States at the end of the American Revolution in 1783.
