We’re all familiar with Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, but have you ever heard of New Ireland? On this day in 1779, a British force of eight ships and 640 soldiers set sail from Halifax with the goal of capturing parts of modern-day Maine from the American Rebels and establishing a Loyalist colony. The expedition was successful, and New Ireland would exist for four years until it was ceded to the United States at the end of the American Revolution in 1783.

A milestone worth remembering. 💥 Did you know that on May 29, 1935, the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site was officially designated a national historic site? This helped ensure the site’s stories would be preserved and shared for generations to come. 💥

Although Halifax itself was never attacked during the American Revolution, there were several naval skirmishes fought just outside of Halifax Harbour. One notable action occurred on this day in 1782, when the British brig HMS Observer defeated the American privateer Jack in the so-called Battle off Halifax.
