June is Pride Month🌈

At THANS, we recognize that 2SLGBTQIA+ people experience gender-based violence at disproportionately high rates and continue to face barriers to safety and support.

This month, we celebrate 2SLGBTQIA+ communities across Nova Scotia and reaffirm our commitment to a future where everyone can live free from violence.

Happy Pride Month!🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Stay tuned throughout the month of June as we share information on:

- IPV-caused brain injury and its impacts.

- Signs, symptoms, and common misconceptions .

- Trauma- and brain injury-informed support strategies.

- Available tools, research, and resources.

By increasing awareness and understanding, we can help improve recognition, response, and support for survivors. 💜

IN THE NEWS: The 2017 Butlin case, as outlined in a recent RCMP watchdog report, highlights serious failures in responding to escalating risk in a sexual assault and harassment investigation that ended in the death of a woman later killed by her neighbour. Despite clear warning signs—including threats and known access to a firearm—risk was not adequately communicated or acted on.

This case reflects what we continue to see in intimate partner and sexual violence: warning signs are often present, but not always recognized or acted upon.

Survivor-serving organizations such as THANS member organizations and hold critical frontline expertise in coercive control, sexual violence, trauma, and risk escalation. This knowledge is essential to effective response and prevention, and must meaningfully inform police training and practice.

Education and early intervention are key to preventing future harm.

Femicides are preventable.

Today, THANS stands in solidarity with the and communities across the country calling for an end to gender-based violence.

The campaign reminds us that ending violence requires collective responsibility and ongoing action. It also calls attention to the disproportionate violence experienced by Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people across Turtle Island.

We all have a role to play in building safer communities rooted in respect, equity, and care.

THANS is deeply saddened by the passing of Pamela Harrison, a long-time advocate and foundational figure within Nova Scotia’s violence against women sector.

As THANS’ first Provincial Coordinator, Pamela played a significant role in shaping the provincial network of transition houses and supports that continue to serve women and children across Nova Scotia today.

We are honoured to share a tribute recognizing Pamela’s extraordinary impact on our organization and this sector.

Today, we honour and remember Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people who are missing and who have been taken by violence.

Red Dress Day is about making visible what has too often been ignored, and holding space for those who are deeply loved and missed by their families and communities.

The violence experienced by Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people is not separate from the impacts of colonialism. It is connected to systems and conditions that continue to put people at risk.

More than a decade after the Calls for Justice, families and communities are still asking for meaningful action. That call remains.

We have a responsibility to listen, to learn, and to support Indigenous-led work to end this violence.

IN THE NEWS: Recent tragedies in the United States, including the deaths of Dr. Cerina Wanzer Fairfax and multiple children in a domestic violence-related mass shooting, are a stark reminder that intimate partner homicide follows clear warning signs—and is often preventable. Risk is highest during separation, especially when combined with factors like firearm access, stalking, and escalating control.

This article highlights research that shares what many of us in the sector already know, and the importance of recognizing these patterns before violence escalates.

Education and early intervention are key.

Our thoughts are with those impacted by these recent tragedies.

Today marks six years since the mass casualty in Nova Scotia.

We remember the 22 people whose lives were taken, and we hold their families, friends, and communities in our thoughts as we take a moment to pause and reflect on what was taken, and on the strength and care that has carried people through in the years since.

As an organization working to prevent gender-based violence, we recognize that this tragedy continues to shape conversations about safety, accountability, and the systems meant to protect us.

We honour those impacted by continuing the work: supporting survivors, strengthening communities, and advocating for change.

We invite you to take a moment today, however feels right for you, to remember and honor those impacted by this tragedy.

Take care of yourselves and eachother today 💜
