Oifis Iomairtean na Gàidhlig / Office of Gaelic Affairs The Office of Gaelic Affairs works to promote the Gaelic language and its cultural expression.

Office Team members are deeply connected to the community they serve. Team members possess strong language and cultural skills.This assists the Office in working with the Gaelic community, representing its interests and relating to others how the language and culture of Gaels benefit the province and are of national and international significance. s an opportunity for growth and development. Gaelic language and culture influence music, stories, traditions and daily life. Vibrant Gaelic communities contribute to the diversity of the province, making Nova Scotia a place unlike any other to call home or to visit. The Office of Gaelic Affairs works with Nova Scotians in the renewal of Gaelic, creating opportunities for people to learn the Gaelic language and experience Gaelic culture. The Office also works in collaboration with individuals, organizations and government agencies in Scotland to further promote and develop Gaelic – a shared linguistic and cultural legacy. In addition, the Office builds on relationships with regions that possess sister Gaelic languages and cultures such as the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. Vision:
Nova Scotians reclaim their Gaelic language and identity as a basis for cultural, spiritual, community and economic renewal. Mandate:
The Office of Gaelic Affairs contributes to the development of Gaelic language and culture in Nova Scotia, so the culture, wisdom, heritage and traditions of Gaels are valued, practiced, and passed on to future generations. It does this by:

Creating awareness of Gaelic language, culture and history and its contribution to Nova Scotia’s diversity, community life and economy. Working with partners in government, in the community and internationally in other Gaelic regions to strengthen Gaelic language and culture. Providing funding support to community groups engaged in Gaelic language and cultural projects. Providing language training, support materials, innovative programming, strategic advice, research, translations and communications services to enable appreciation, acquisition and use of Gaelic language and culture. Building partnerships within government to ensure investment in and stewardship of these language and cultural resources that are uniquely Nova Scotian.

Bun is Bàrr | Root and Branch is a Mentoring Program managed by the Office of Gaelic Affairs, which provides Gaelic-speakers in Nova Scotia with the opportunity to work with Gaelic mentors and elders as they develop their language and cultural skills. The goal of Bun is Bàrr is to help create a new generation of Gaelic tradition bearers: those who are knowledgeable of, and steeped in, Nova Scotia’s Gaelic tradition. Bun is Bàrr seeks to achieve three objectives:
1. Continued transmission of Gaelic language through culture
2. Re-integration of Nova Scotia Gaelic expression, such as song, music, story, tradition, custom, and dance into the social life of Gaels
3. Restore collective Gaelic memory and identity

The Gàidheil air Adhart deadline has been extended to September 11th!

*Eligibility: Any individual, group, non-profit or organization based in Nova Scotia may apply.

Activities, products or projects that support the preservation and development of Gaelic language and culture throughout Nova Scotia are eligible.

Priority will be placed on specific cultural learning efforts (e.g. individuals studying Gaelic language, music, art, dance, etc., in a recognized program, immersion, or other setting) especially those that will have an impact on the wider community.

The maximum award is $1,500.00.

Funding cannot be used for capital assets or operational costs.

Receipts for purchases will be requested as part of final reports.

CBU is delighted to offer an introduction to the Gaelic language online this year with Carmen MacArthur! Classes run virtually on Wednesdays, 1:00-3:30 pm. In this conversation Gaelic course, Carmen will get students speaking and understanding Gaelic right away!
