It's Foster Family Appreciation Week, and we want to take a moment to say thank you.

To every foster family in Ontario: the school runs, the hard days, the small wins, and showing up again the next morning. It all matters, and it doesn't go unnoticed.

You probably already know which one of these you couldn't do. Most people do, and that's useful information rather than a problem.

These three aren't a ladder. Short-term isn't the starter version of long-term, it's a different job, and being sure about one doesn't tell you much about the other.

So it's less about which one you're ready for, and more about which one suits the way you live. And you get asked before every match, so a yes today can be a not right now later.

Which would you say yes to, and which is a no for now?

This Thanksgiving, we're thinking about every Safe Harbours family. 🍂

To our foster parents: thank you for the patience, the late nights, and the steady care you give every single day. It means more than you know to the kids in your home.

Happy Thanksgiving from our team to yours. 🧡

This Thanksgiving, we're grateful for every Safe Harbours family. 🍂

To our foster parents, thank you for the patience and steady care you bring every day. And to our team, thank you for walking alongside them.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Safe Harbours. 🧡

This question usually gets asked quietly, by one partner to the other. And often that is where the conversation stops.

Ask your own children before you ask us. Not whether they agree, which hands them a decision they should not have to carry. Ask what they think would change, and what they would worry about.

Their questions are more specific than anything an agency could tell you. Where would they sleep. Would you still come to my game. What do I say when someone asks at school.

Those are answerable. That is the point of asking first.

If you have been thinking about this quietly, send it to the person you would be deciding with.

Most people walk into a review with the good news ready and the hard part left at home. It feels like the safer choice.

But a review is the one point where everyone working with a child looks at the same information and asks whether the plan still fits. Nobody comes out of it having passed or failed.

One thing that helps: anything agreed at a review has to be written into the plan of care to actually happen. So if you ask for tutoring, respite or a Child and Youth Worker, ask for it to be recorded. That's what turns a good meeting into an arrangement.

And if something isn't right and your review is weeks away, don't wait for the date. Call your case manager.

A lot of people picture this job as working through somebody else's plan for the day. It's closer to the opposite.

Amanda is one of our Program Supervisors, and she walks through what a shift actually involves. The independence is the thing new staff notice first. You're making real calls in the moment, with the foster parents there to guide you.

We are hiring Child and Youth workers. Check it out here: https://www.safeharbours.ca/careers/child-and-youth-worker/

You can foster either way, through your local society or through a private agency. What you are choosing between is not two kinds of fostering. It is two support models, and both operate under the same Ontario ministry framework.

What actually differs: training depth, whether a person answers at 2am, whether clinical support comes into your home or you are referred out to find it, respite availability, and whether you are consulted before a match and can decline it.

Those are the five questions worth asking whoever you call, including us: https://www.safeharbours.ca/become-a-foster-parent/

What do you actually want to know about fostering? Ask it below.

Not the version on a government page. The thing you have been wondering about and have not put to anybody.

Foster parents, case managers and our clinical team will answer them, and the ones that come up most will become their own posts.

No question is too basic. Most people asking have been thinking about this for a year or more.
