Special Areas Board Special Areas is a unique rural municipal area covering approximately 2.1 million hectares in southeastern Alberta.

The Special Areas Board provides municipal services and public land management. Special Areas Board (SAB) social media pages are for communication of programs, services, news and events to keep residents informed. SAB social media is not monitored outside of regular business hours. Direct messages and posts are not considered official correspondence. All comments will be regularly moderated and reviewed by SAB communication staff. The Special Areas Board will not tolerate or respond to comments that are offensive to, or violate the privacy of, an individual or an organization, or comments that are rude in tone, or abusive as determined by SAB. Users comment at their own risk, taking personal responsibility for comments, username and any information provided. If SAB Communication staff find that a comment or post contravenes any of these guidelines, staff will make a copy of the comment for the record and delete or hide the comment/post from SAB’s page. If the user continues to contravene any of the guidelines they shall be blocked from SAB social media pages.

🌾When enjoying public access to Community Pastures, please respect the land, livestock, wildlife, and any Species at Risk. Hunters must avoid disturbing animals and help protect these important areas.

🔗To gain access to a community pasture, first fill out the form available at: https://portal.laserfiche.ca/u2921/forms/RecAccess

👍Requests will be reviewed and you will receive an email stating if access is granted or denied.
You are not permitted to access the community pasture until you have received permission via email.

✅ Access may be restricted or denied due to livestock presence, fire bans, sensitive wildlife habitat, camping plans, or activities that do not align with pasture management rules.

🔥 Fire Safety Reminder: Storing Lithium-Ion Batteries Safely

🪫Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day—phones, power tools, e-bikes, laptops, and some surprising ones like singing birthday cards. While they are generally safe, improper storage can increase the risk of fire.

Here are a few important safety tips for storing lithium-ion batteries:
✅ Store in a cool, dry place – Keep batteries away from heat sources, direct sunlight, and flammable materials.
✅ Use manufacturer-approved chargers and storage cases – Avoid aftermarket or damaged charging equipment.
✅ Avoid storing fully charged or fully discharged – Store batteries at approximately 50% charge if they will not be used for an extended period.
✅ Keep away from metal objects – Loose batteries can short-circuit if they come in contact with metal (e.g., keys, coins, tools).
✅ Do not store damaged or swollen batteries – These are a serious fire risk and should be disposed of safely at a designated recycling center.

🚫 Never store lithium-ion batteries in high-temperature areas such as vehicles, sheds with poor ventilation, or near heating appliances.

🌡️If a battery feels hot, emits an unusual smell, starts smoking, or shows signs of swelling—stop using it immediately and move it to a safe, non-combustible area away from people and structures.

❗Your awareness and safe storage practices help reduce fire risks in our community. If you ever have concerns about a potential battery fire, don’t hesitate to call 911.

🔥It’s Fire Prevention Week (October 4-10, 2026). This week Special Areas Fire Services will be educating you safe charging practices.

🔌Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging. These batteries store more energy, and fires can grow quickly if they fail.

☎️Always contact landowners & leaseholders before entering private or public lands.

🥾Use foot access - instead of driving - when possible.
🧯Have a fully charged water extinguisher.
🚭Reduce the risk of grass fires by not smoking.
⛔Do not drive in grassy or vegetated areas.

🔥It’s Fire Prevention Week (October 4-10, 2026). This week Special Areas Fire Services will be educating you safe charging practices.

🔌Use the cord and charger that came with your device or ones approved by the manufacturer. Using the wrong charger can damage the battery and increase the risk of fire.
🌡️Charge devices on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or floor. Beds, couches, and pillows can trap heat and block airflow, which can cause a battery to overheat.
