Last week we had the honor of experiencing throat singing, or katajjaq, performed by Inuit artists Akinisie Sivuarapik & Amaly Sallualuk from Puvirnituq, Nunavik. This profound tradition is a rapid, rhythmic, and deeply emotional art form that imitates nature and animal sounds. Sharing this rich cultural heritage with guests from around the world was a meaningful experience, showcasing the beauty and depth of Inuit culture.

We are thrilled to welcome Spruced Up Labrador Inc. back to base camp from Aug 14-21 for another week of botanical infusion workshops! Last season, their workshop was a success, teaching guests the art and skills of botanical infusions.

Heather Bursey, the owner, began her artistic journey with her grandmother, who crafted sealskin boots, slippers, and intricate beadwork while sharing her knowledge of spruce gum and juniper’s medicinal properties. Combining her health care background with these early design influences, Heather now creates unique, infused products. We are excited for a week of learning and creativity passed down through generations!

Today, we are welcoming Jacinda Beals to the basecamp for the week. A renowned singer-songwriter from Labrador, Beals draws inspiration from her deep love for The Big Land and the people. Her music features a blues-folk vibe, and she was so inspired by her previous performance at Basecamp last season that she and her bandmate Greg Peach wrote the "Torngat Mountains Song," celebrating Northern Labrador.
Based in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Beals regularly performs with the Jacinda Beals Band, which is currently touring Labrador and working on their fourth album. Their music is available on iTunes, Spotify, and YouTube.
