Self-regulation is hard, even for adults. We have to practice it regularly. But recognising emotions and managing them well is not just a job for children. It is our responsibility as adults to recognise when we are feeling like we are no longer calm and do what we need to to stay in control. It is also our responsibility to teach our children how to do this. If we are all taking responsibility for our own emotions and openly using strategies to calm, we will create a home where emotions are acknowledged and managed, creating a self-regulated family.

Big shout out and thanks to our first visitors Tianna and Bryn! We enjoyed some trampoline and sliding gross motor play, fine motor skills with wood fishes, and some conflict resolution that sparked some questions in me! 😜 We offered grace, patience and love! I'm wondering what other tools we could employ. πŸ€” Maggie wanted to play an organized game with the fishes in the box, Bryn wanted to pour the fishes out of the box! 😝

How do you handle kid conflicts?

We made separate play areas and each of us focused on the kids interests with 2 different toys. With older kids I like to say 'Maggie wants to play with the fishes this way, Bryn wants to play that way, what could happen next?' and work through ideas with the kids letting them come up with solutions. (In hine sight I still could have said this and let Maggie come up with ideas. πŸ€”)

What do you think? What are your strategies? (Successful and not!) 😜

Ps have you seen this style of paint book Maggie's using? It's water! The black spots are watercolors and when you brush water on them: p**f! πŸ˜πŸŽ¨πŸ–ŒοΈπŸ‘©β€πŸŽ¨

When your child is sick and needs to stay home and you and your spouse (or child's Guardians) all have paying jobs, who stays home from their job? And if you have alternate care like a Grandma or friend, who arranges that care? (This is called mental labour and is often 'invisible' and can add unseen stress and anxiety to a relationship).

If the person is you or your partner that's expected to stay home and/or arrange childcare, why do you think that is? Is it an assumption or previously agreed upon? Is it based on gender? Is it based on who makes more money at their job? Family values? Did you fall into a role based on your parents roles and expectations of you? Or did you choose your role willingly? Is it based on you and your spouse's individual strengths?

Enlighten me! This is our first time both of us are earning money outside and inside the home and I'm excited to map out a plan for this in our home. Who's responsible for childcare and arranging it? πŸ€”
