Public Notice – Safe Grad Mock Accident Exercise

On Monday, June 8, at approximately 10:30 a.m., the Antigonish Town Fire Department, in partnership with the RCMP, EHS, and other emergency response agencies, will be conducting a Safe Grad mock accident exercise for the graduating class of Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional High School.

As part of the exercise, emergency vehicles will depart from the Antigonish Arena parking lot and travel along Fairview Street, Highland Drive, and Braemore Avenue before arriving at the school.

Please be advised that this is only an exercise, and there is no actual emergency. The event is being held for graduating students and school faculty as part of the school's Safe Grad program, helping to raise awareness about the consequences of impaired and distracted driving and the importance of making safe choices.

Residents may notice an increased presence of emergency vehicles in the area during this time. We thank the public for their understanding and cooperation as we work with our community partners to deliver this important educational program.

This is an exercise only.

Good evening !!!

Over two full weekends in May, members of Havre Boucher Fire, Tracadie & District Volunteer Fire Department and St. Andrews Volunteer Fire Department were engaged in a 40hr Medical First Responder course. Members learned how to assess, stabilize, and manage critical incidents until professional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrive.

Core skills learned include:

Patient Assessment & Diagnostics: Standardized assessment protocols, taking vital signs, and evaluating trauma or medical emergencies.

Advanced Airway & Oxygen: Management of airways, artificial respiration, and oxygen administration.

Trauma & Injury Management: Spinal immobilization, splinting unstable musculoskeletal injuries, and head/face injury management.

Medical Emergencies: Interventions for cardiovascular events, diabetic emergencies, seizures, and severe allergic reactions.

Pre-Hospital Operations: Patient lifting and moving, multiple casualty incident management, and communication with EMS.

We would like to thank the members of the departments for giving up two full weekends in 1 month to enable them to be in a better position to help their communities. We would also like to send a special thank you to Lee Norman from the Canadian Red Cross (who is also an Emergency Health Services - EHS Medic) for putting on such a knowledgeable and funfilled course. Lee even spent a little bit of time teaching a couple future members how to perform CPR & how to help someone choking.
