πŸ’™ National Drowning Prevention Week - Watch Me Wednesday πŸ’™

Today’s theme is Watch Me Wednesday, a reminder that active supervision is one of the most important ways to keep children safe around water.

πŸ‘€ What does "within arm's reach" mean? For young children, supervision means being close enough to reach them immediately. If you cannot touch your child quickly, you are too far away. Stay in the water or right beside the water, keep your eyes on them at all times, and avoid distractions such as phones, conversations, reading, or household chores. Drowning can happen quickly and silently.

🏊 Backyard Pool Safety Checklist The Lifesaving Society encourages pool owners to regularly check that their backyard pool is as safe as possible. Key items include: βœ… Secure, self-closing and self-latching gates
βœ… Four-sided fencing around the pool
βœ… Rescue equipment nearby (reaching pole, throwing aid, first aid kit)
βœ… Clear pool rules and safety signage
βœ… Parent or guardian supervision whenever children are in or around the water
βœ… Removing or restricting access when the pool is not in use

πŸ’‘ Water Smart Tip: Designate a "Water Watcher" whenever children are swimming. That adult's only job is to actively supervise the water, free from distractions.

This National Drowning Prevention Week, let's work together to keep our families safe. The best flotation device for a child is an attentive adult within arm's reach.

🀝🏊 Buddy Up Tuesday: Never Swim Alone! 🏊🀝

Swimming is always more fun with a friend, but it's also much safer.

Whether you're at the pool, lake, or beach, always swim with a buddy. A swimming buddy can:
βœ… Get help in an emergency
βœ… Recognize when something isn't right
βœ… Encourage safer choices around the water
βœ… Make water activities more enjoyable

Remember: πŸ”Ή Stay close enough to see and hear each other. πŸ”Ή Check in frequently. πŸ”Ή Never rely on inflatable toys as safety devices. πŸ”Ή Even strong swimmers should use the buddy system.

The buddy system is one of the simplest and most effective ways to stay safe around water.

This , make a promise to never swim alone and encourage your family and friends to do the same.

πŸ’™ Safe swimmers swim together!
