🌟 Artist Feature of the Month 🌟
Russell was born in the town of Kamsack, in eastern Saskatchewan. Russell has found himself in a number of towns, including Fort McMurray, Okotoks, and High River.
Russell’s painting journey began 12 years ago, in Fort McMurray. After an impromptu watercolour lesson, Russell realized the fun he could have with colour. His first pieces were painted from black and white photographs, allowing him to become creative with his colour choices. Although much of his earlier work was in portraiture, Russell has since ventured into landscapes and animals.
What does Russell like about High River? The community. He sees “High River (as) a community with a big 'C'.” And Russell has certainly become a big part of that big 'C'. Both he and his wife, Heather, offer art programs to both youth and seniors as well as participate in community art events. He has also become heavily involved with the Venue. This has included participating as in the Venue's "Open Air Gallery" in 2025.
More recently, Russell has helped facilitate a collaborative mural in Okotoks, something that he hopes to replicate in High River.
Russell and Heather operate Birdsong Studios at 36B 4th Avenue S.E. This unique property serves as both their home, art studio, and an Air B&B.
Russell’s piece titled "George Emerson” is on display at the Museum until September 2027. Currently, the Museum has puzzles featuring Russell’s art for sale in our gift shop. Also available are copies of “Colours of the Wild” a beautifully written and illustrated children’s book created by both Heather and Russell.
