I am very happy I got to go out and spend some time at this Friday in Green square! Remastered Band was awesome (as always) and I was able to stop in at The Blend Kitchen + Bar Hinton and then have some ice cream from The Funky Monkey! Great to see so many people out there and I’m really excited to see these going on all summer.

Griffin and I just had the most wonderful lunch at Montanas in Hinton! The hot sizzling chicken fajitas were delicious. It’s exciting to have a new restaurant in town. I can’t believe how extensive the renovations are! Prices are really fair and service was excellent! Welcome to Hinton Montana's BBQ!

It’s been a great weekend out at Wild Mountain Music Festival and it’s been encouraging to see our community partners Hiv West Yellowhead out at the festival educating young and old alike on Naloxone use and safe s*x education. Not a comfortable subject for everyone yet very important discussions to have with our youth. It’s great to have groups like this operational in our communities and making programs and training accessible and conversations comfortable.

I was so grateful to spend most of this past week in Edmonton attending the FCM Annual Conference with about 3,000 municipal leaders from across Canada along with three of my fellow councillors.

It was a great opportunity to step away from day-to-day work and learn about new ideas, emerging challenges, and innovative solutions that communities are using to tackle issues like housing, infrastructure, economic development, and community growth. My study tour of infill housing was SO interesting. I could have spent the whole day chatting with the city of Edmonton staff on this initiative. I also got to see the old Charles Camsell hospital conversion into housing units which was wild! I also got to learn about the history of the Muttart conservatory! What a gem in Edmonton. I wish I could have went on every study tour.

One of the biggest takeaways for me is that while every community has its own unique character, many of us are facing similar challenges. It was nice to see how Hinton is actually ahead of many rural communities in receiving federal funding for projects and for me to be able to contribute to the conversation on a national level. The conversations, workshops, and networking opportunities provided valuable insights that I look forward to bringing back to Hinton and sharing Hintons successes.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent our community, learn from others, and continue finding ways to make Hinton an even better place to live, work, and raise a family. I was actually in tears a few times as I watched the events and sessions.

And yes of course there was a lot of laughter, a lot of walking, a lot of karaoke 🎤 and more municipal acronyms than I thought humanly possible.

Bill was there with us in spirit 🛼🛼🛼🛼🛼

Please follow Town of Hinton and Brian LaBerge Mayor of Hinton for updates on the water meter billing start dates. We did amend the start date of water meters tonight to May 1 but I’ll leave the specifics to the pros this week. I am just sending this at the request of a few concerned citizens who haven’t been able to schedule water meter appointments yet and are concerned. Administration a council is aware of your issues and extending the deadline accordingly.

Very sad time for our Town of Hinton family this season. My thoughts are with both of these men’s families along with the Worthing family mourning “Butch” who passed as well during the holiday season.

‼️Important message from our CAO Kristen Chambers: New Modular Housing in East Hardisty‼️

So many questions about the new modular housing being brought into East Hardisty! I will post most of the facts here and will try to stay up on the social media pages as well.

These units are low income seniors housing. This housing is owned by the Province and will be managed by The Evergreens Foundation.

The first group to be offered these rentals will be the seniors who lived in Pine Grove Manor, the Senior Self-Contained Apartment building which burned down in Jasper. Right now many are living in Hinton, Edson and Edmonton areas. Knowing that many are now settled and not wanting to make another move we would then be going to our regular seniors waitlist to fill remaining units.

If you are a Hinton senior and want to apply you can either go to our office across from Freson on the valley or you can apply online on our website under the “Seniors Self Contained” application. The rental rates are based on 30% of your gross annual income as per the criteria of the government program.

There are 16 one bedroom and 5 two bedroom units. Parking will be in front of the unit.Each unit will have their own garbage bin like other residential areas.

The land was transferred in August 2024 from the town of Hinton to the Alberta Social Housing Corporation. That’s the area of the government that holds the assets of the affordable housing programs in the province. The assessed value of the land at the time of the transfer was 610,000. The province’s investment in the property and servicing is 18 million dollars. Other than the transfer of land there is ZERO additional things being paid for by the town.

The Pine Grove Manor apartments will be rebuilt in Jasper and those residents will return home at that time. This housing will remain a permanent community here in Hinton for years to come.

Hello Everyone
At last nights Comittee of the whole meeting we further discussed the budget. After this discussion it puts us at our regular operational budget increase just over 2%. This reduction was done by allocation of LGFF (funds that the province provides to all municipalities for allocation)and using money we had in a tax stabilization account that had been set aside last year. No services were cut.
For the recreation centre portion we came to consensus to phase $2.64 million dollar increase over 2 years, resulting in a roughly 10% increase in 2026 and 8% increase in 2027.

These items are still not finalized and will be coming to council next Tuesday. This will mean a roughly 12% increase in 2026.
