πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ June is Pride Month!
This month, the Pride flag will fly at District Hall and our local fire halls as a visible reminder of our commitment to inclusion, respect, and belonging for all members of our community.

Pride is about celebrating diversity, supporting one another, and recognizing that everyone deserves to feel safe and valued for who they are.

♻️ Hope’s Recycling Reality Check
Our latest Recycle BC audit found that 25.4% of the material placed in curbside recycling carts shouldn't have been there. That's one in every four items!

Some of the biggest problem items found in Hope's recycling stream were:
🚫 Durable plastic items (toys, storage bins, laundry baskets)
🚫 Clothing and textiles
🚫 Scrap metal
🚫 Broken glass
🚫 Bagged and unsortable materials

Why does this matter?
When non-recyclable items end up in curbside recycling:
β€’ Entire loads can be rejected
β€’ Sorting equipment can be damaged
β€’ Workers face safety risks from sharp or hazardous materials
β€’ Recycling becomes more expensive for everyone

A few simple steps can make a big difference:
βœ” Place recyclables loose in your cart (not in bags)
βœ” Keep clothing and textiles out of curbside recycling
βœ” Take scrap metal, electronics, batteries, and hazardous waste to the appropriate depot
βœ” Keep broken glass out of recycling carts
βœ” When in doubt, look it up before tossing it in the bin
Every correctly sorted item helps keep Hope's recycling program safe, efficient, and effective.

Need another option? The Hope Bottle Depot (517A Corbett Street) accepts beverage containers, end-of-life electronics, and small appliances.

And don't forget about annual local recycling & reuse opportunities, including:
πŸ›οΈ Trash 2 Treasure – June 13
πŸ“„ Shred It Day
🌎 Earth Day Recycling Event

Let's work together to reduce contamination and make sure more of what we recycle actually gets recycled. ♻️

We understand this closure is inconvenient and appreciate your patience while repairs are completed.

Updates, including a reopening date, will be provided as more information becomes available.

🌿 Help Keep Hope Safe & Beautiful 🌿

As the weather warms up and everything starts growing, it's a great time to check in on your yard and property.

The District of Hope's Good Neighbour Bylaw requires property owners and occupiers to maintain their properties and prevent excessive growth of grass, weeds, dead vegetation, and other unsightly conditions. These issues aren't just aesthetic… they can also create fire hazards during the dry season.

By keeping properties maintained, we can all help reduce fire risk, support neighbourhood pride, and contribute to a safer community for everyone.

Thank you for doing your part to keep Hope looking its best!

🌳 Tree Removal Work in Coquihalla River Park

Beginning the week of June 8, crews will be removing several trees in Coquihalla River Park following a recent arborist assessment.

The trees scheduled for removal have been deemed high hazard and have been identified for removal to help protect public safety. Prior to any tree removal, a bird nesting survey will be completed by a qualified environmental professional.

Temporary access restrictions may be in place in the immediate work area while crews complete the work. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

πŸ”₯ A FireSmart Reminder for Property Owners
As we head into the warmer months, now is a great time to look around your property and remove any unnecessary branches, yard waste, and other combustible materials.

Dead vegetation, fallen branches, and debris can act as fuel during a wildfire. Simple maintenance activities such as cleaning up yard waste, pruning trees, and keeping grass and vegetation well-managed can help reduce wildfire risk around your home.

FireSmart practices don't have to be complicated. Small actions can make a big difference:
βœ… Remove dead branches and vegetation from your yard
βœ… Keep roofs, gutters, and decks free of debris
βœ… Store firewood away from structures during fire season
βœ… Maintain a well-watered and tidy landscape
βœ… Dispose of yard waste appropriately

The District of Hope's FireSmart program continues to work with residents to build a more wildfire-resilient community. By taking proactive steps around our homes and neighbourhoods, we can all help reduce wildfire risk.
