☀️ Stay safe in the summer sun: Know the UV Index! ☀️

Available at weather.gc.ca or in our app, the UV Index tells you how strong the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays are.

The higher the UV index, the more the sun’s rays can harm your skin and eyes.
Sun safety is for everyone, kids and adults alike.

Protect your skin to reduce the risk of sunburn, eye problems, skin aging and skin cancer. Even when it's cloudy or mild weather, UV can cause burns.

Protect Yourself:

✅ Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every 2 hours and after swimming/sweating
✅ Wear a hat, sunglasses, and protective clothing
✅ Seek shade during peak hours (UV exposure risk is highest from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.)

Enjoy the sunshine safely. 🌞

This year’s outlook is in! ☀️🌡️

Experts predicted warmer-than-normal temperatures across most of Canada.

Although some regions have received higher-than-normal amounts of precipitation this spring, delaying conditions favourable for wildfire, fire risk is expected to increase as the summer progresses.

Another key factor this year is the evolving global climate pattern. We’re watching a shift to El Niño later this year.

El Nino occurs when the surface water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, become warmer than average. This rise in temperature changes the atmosphere circulation and weather patterns.

Don’t forget to stay prepared this summer season. For the latest forecasts and real-time weather warnings, download our app or visit our website: https://weather.gc.ca/

Feeling inspired to get outside for a game?!⚽

But when should you call “time out” for bad weather?

⚡Lightning kills 2-3 Canadians every year. And injures close to 180 more.

Our Lightning Map shows lightning strikes in real-time. If you see a circle over your area, or can hear thunder, get to a safe place immediately—a car with the windows up, or an enclosed building.

To better understand the weather Canadians experience today, our Rapid Extreme Weather Event Attribution system analyzes events shortly after they occur.

It helps scientists determine how human-caused is influencing the likelihood of extreme events such as extreme heat, wildfires, heavy rain and extreme cold.

By examining trends over the past 150 years, this work reveals how the frequency and intensity of extreme weather have shifted due to human activity.

These insights support more informed decisions, helping Canadians protect their health and safety today while strengthening the long-term resilience of our communities.
