Eggs, Towers, and the Importance of Being Prepared!
This morning, Huntsville Fire Department had the opportunity to visit the Grade 7/8 Science class at St. Mary Catholic School for their egg drop challenge.
The students put their creativity, problem-solving, and engineering skills to the test as they designed protective containers to keep their eggs from breaking when dropped from our aerial ladder at heights of 60 and 100 feet.
To keep things interesting, firefighters also brought along a pumpkin for its own "drop test." While many of the students' eggs survived thanks to careful planning and design, the pumpkin's outcome was much easier to predict.
What impressed us most was the amount of thought and preparation that went into each project. The students didn't just hope for the best. They planned ahead, tested ideas, and worked to protect what mattered.
That same lesson applies at home when it comes to fire safety. Emergencies happen without warning, and the best outcomes often come from being prepared before they happen. Having working smoke alarms, practicing a home escape plan, and knowing two ways out of every room are simple steps that can make a life-saving difference.
A big thank you to the staff and students at St. Mary Catholic School for welcoming us and letting us be part of a fun and educational morning!
