TOTAL BURN BAN - NO FIRES

Due to the extreme fire hazard and the increased forest fire activity in Northern Ontario, the Fire Chief has declared a Total Burn Ban for the Municipality of Shuniah, in effect immediately until revoked.
All fire permit privileges are suspended and no open fires or fireworks will be allowed within the municipality.

INSTRUCTIONS

- Do not start any open air fires. This includes campfires, burning grass or wood debris, or using burn barrels
- Do not light any fireworks
- Gas or liquid fuel stoves that can be turned off easily are permitted
- Avoid activities that could spark a wildfire
- If you see a forest fire within the Municipality call 9-1-1, elsewhere 310-FIRE (3473)
- Visit ontario.ca/forestfire for additional information on the current wildfire situation in Ontario

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
A Total Burn Ban means absolutely no "Open Air Burning" including "Campfires" or "Cooking Fires" or charcoal barbecues, but does not include the use of cooking equipment which is equipped with a shut off mechanism.

It is a temporary measure put in place by the Fire Chief when the fire danger is extreme to prevent human caused fires. A Total Burn Ban may last from a few days to weeks depending on conditions. The restrictions are lifted as soon as conditions allow.

When a Total Burn Ban is declared, it is illegal to set a fire within the municipality. Failure to comply could result in prosecution, as well as the financial responsibility for any costs incurred in fighting a wildland fire and/or damages caused by the fire.

You can still go camping, hiking, fishing, and have fun outdoors, but if you need heat for cooking and warmth, you’ll have to use a portable gas or propane stove. Portable charcoal equipment (e.g., BBQs, Hibachis, etc.) are illegal for use during a Total Burn Ban except close to a dwelling that you legally own or occupy or in an organized campground.

The BBQ went great! Shout out to Chef Matt for volunteering to keep us all fed, and for those who brought treats to share. We appreciate you all!

Thank you to everyone that came out and supported us the past 5 weeks. It was a learning experience and I really enjoyed doing it. I hope the kids and parents enjoyed it too!
