Today, we are reminded that behind every set of turnout gear is a person.

A person with a family, friends, job, responsibilities and a life outside the fire hall.

We are deeply saddened by the sudden death of an active member of South Stormont Fire Rescue.

Our thoughts are with their family and loved ones, and with the members of Station 3 and the entire South Stormont Fire Rescue family who are trying to come to terms with this loss.

Being a paid on call firefighter means answering the call when your community needs you, whether it’s the middle of the night, during dinner, at a family event or while you’re at your regular job, it’s whenever the pager goes off.

The vast majority of our South Stormont Fire Rescue firefighters do this without firefighting being their full time job. They leave their families, their beds and their workplaces to help others, often returning home in the early hours only to get up a few hours later and go to work.

So today, we don’t just remember a firefighter. We remember a person who chose to serve their neighbours.

Live everyday to the fullest, you never know when it could be your last.

With heavy hearts, Council, Staff and our entire community join the South Stormont Fire and Rescue family in mourning the loss of a member from Station 3 in Newington.

Our thoughts are with their family, friends, and fellow firefighters during this incredibly difficult time. Their dedication to serving others and supporting our community will be remembered with gratitude and respect.

Please keep all those affected by this loss in your thoughts.

September 11, 2001.

Twenty-five years later, the memories of that day remain difficult to put into words.

On that morning, 19 terrorists hijacked four commercial aircraft. Two were flown into the World Trade Center, one struck the Pentagon, and the fourth crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers and crew fought back. Nearly 3,000 innocent people lost their lives.

For those of us who wear the uniform, one number carries a particularly heavy weight:

343.

343 members of the New York City Fire Department made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001.

They were firefighters, officers, paramedics and members of a department that ran toward danger while millions of people were running away. Nearly 1,000 FDNY firefighters responded to the World Trade Center that morning. Many climbed the stairs of the towers carrying heavy equipment, knowing only that people needed help.

And the sacrifice did not end that day. Thousands of first responders, recovery workers and survivors have suffered serious illnesses from their exposure at Ground Zero, and many have since lost their lives.

As firefighters, we understand something about the bond that exists between people who answer the call. Different communities. Different uniforms. The same commitment to help someone on the worst day of their life.

Today, the members of the Ingleside Firefighters Association stand with our brothers and sisters of the FDNY, with the families who continue to carry their loss, and with every first responder whose life was forever changed by September 11.

🚌 BACK TO SCHOOL — LET’S GET EVERYONE THERE SAFELY!

It’s hard to believe, but back to school is here! Students, families, and school buses return to the roads bringing children to schools throughout our region including our very own Rothwell-Osnabruck School and Our Lady of Good Counsel. We’re asking everyone to take a little extra time and a little extra care.

🚗 For drivers:

• Slow down and stay alert when travelling through Ingleside.
• Watch carefully for children crossing streets and walking to school.
• Be prepared for school buses stopping frequently.
• NEVER pass a school bus when its red lights are flashing.
• That text or phone call can wait until you get to your destination.
• Parents dropping off children are reminded to be mindful of no parking and no stopping zones, and to ensure that fire hydrants remain accessible at all times.
• Give yourself extra time, patience can save a life.

🚸 For pedestrians and students:

• Use crosswalks and designated crossing areas whenever possible. Make sure to activate the lights on Dickinson Dr.
• Stop, look and listen before crossing.
• Make eye contact with drivers before crossing.

The first few days of school can be especially busy as everyone gets back into their routines.

Slow down, be patient and expect the unexpected.

What a night at the South Stormont Canada Day 2.0!

After the weather had other plans for the last fireworks, it was great to see Mother Nature finally cooperate this time!

We had the pleasure of being out in the community for the Long Sault Fireworks, and it was great to see so many familiar faces and meet so many new ones.

We had so many people stop by to chat with our Firefighters about fire safety, the importance of working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, ask questions, and share stories. These conversations are exactly why community events like this are so important to us.

And of course, we were thrilled to hand out some Tim Hortons gift cards to some very deserving young kids who stopped by! They answered some pretty tough skill testing questions for us.

❄️ Freezing Rain Storm Preparedness – Township of South Stormont ❄️

Environment conditions indicate freezing rain may impact our area. Residents are encouraged to take steps now to stay safe and prepared:

✔️ Avoid unnecessary travel and allow extra time if you must be on the roads
✔️ Keep a 72-hour emergency kit ready (flashlight, batteries, food, water, medications)
✔️ Charge phones and devices in case of power outages
✔️ Secure outdoor items and be cautious of falling branches or ice buildup
✔️ Check on elderly neighbours, family members, and those who may need assistance
✔️ If using generators or alternate heat sources, ensure proper ventilation

Infrastructure Services is monitoring conditions and will respond as required.
