At Monday’s council meeting a public hearing was held as per the requirements of the Municipal Government Act to receive feedback regarding an amendment to the Woodlands Area Structure Plan (south Innisfail) , and secondly, to amend the zoning of a portion of this land.

Second and third readings of these two bylaws were passed unanimously by Council. These are the first steps for a proposed 44 unit single storey townhome community to be built in phases. The development is able to tie into existing water/wastewater lines.

The next steps for the developer are:
- apply for subdivision of a bare land condominium plan
- construction of infrastructure - services, roads, etc.
- development permit approvals
- building permit approvals

Listening to councils feedback, we all felt this is a good fit for Innisfail, another type of housing that is needed, and it is positive to have the new owners of this land wanting to move forward, demonstrating their confidence in our community.

Each year, the Town collects an Education Tax on behalf of the provincial government. The money flows directly to the Government of Alberta. Municipalities have no control over the amount assessed or collected. There was an increase in this tax in 2025, and there will be another increase in 2026. The Education ministry received an increase in the newly released 2026provincial budget - the question is … will any of it benefit schools in our community??

Big things have a way of happening in small towns; our latest impact story depicts blue-sky ideas, prairie roots, and real results.

Deep Sky put Innisfail on the map as a destination for clean energy technology. But first came the groundwork. The Energy Futures Lab worked with the Town through a collaborative, year-long process to cultivate the culture, confidence, and shared vision to move fast when opportunity knocked.

Innisfail's story shows what's possible at the regional level — and it's a model worth paying attention to.

Ask any mayor or councillor and they will tell you that rising costs are one of their biggest challenges in serving their community. Many factors have combined to drive up costs for municipalities.

Additionally, Alberta has a law that forbids your municipal government from planning to spend more money than it will raise in taxes and other revenue. So, when the costs for your municipal government go up, your council has only two choices:

1. Spend less money, which might mean cutting services for your community, or
2. Raise more money, usually by raising municipal property taxes or fees.

We need to have a conversation about how Alberta's local community services are funded. ABmunis' ‘Property Taxes Reimagined: Fair Funding for Strong Communities’ has been created to help Albertans understand how property taxes are structured.

We will continue to add more information, local stories, and videos.
