Insurance is an important part of protecting both the Town and taxpayers. Just like individual citizens, municipalities own property & equipment, and provide services that carry financial and liability risks. While the Municipal Government Act provides some protections and limitations on municipal liability, it does not eliminate those risks. Insurance helps protect the Town from the financial impact of major property losses, accidents, liability claims, and other unexpected events.

Insurance costs can increase even when the Town’s coverage has not changed. Rising construction and repair costs, higher vehicle and equipment values, claims across the insurance industry and emerging risks such as cyber security all affect what municipalities pay.

Maintaining appropriate insurance helps protect public assets and reduces the risk that a major unexpected loss would need to be covered directly through Town reserves or future tax dollars.

The Town must cover the increases in these costs as part of the annual budget. To learn more, join us at the Library & Learning Centre on Thursday, September 17 starting at 6:00 pm.
