🏔️ A landscape shaped by time

From rugged cliffs and rolling tundra to rivers, lakes, and the Arctic coast, Tuktut Nogait National Park is home to a remarkable diversity of landscapes and wildlife.

These lands have supported people for generations and continue to provide habitat for wildlife and opportunities for travel, harvesting, learning, and connection.

Protecting Tuktut Nogait means caring for the land and waters today so that these special places remain healthy and meaningful for generations to come.

A heartfelt quyanainni to the Elders and community members of Tuktoyaktuk who came out to celebrate Elders Day at Pingo Canadian Landmark.

It was a wonderful afternoon filled with food, stories, laughter, and time together. We are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate and learn from our Elders, whose knowledge, experiences, and connections to the land are so important to our communities.

A special thank you to everyone who helped make the event possible, from organizing and preparing the food to providing transportation, helping with setup, and making sure the afternoon was a welcoming and memorable one.

We are grateful to everyone who came out and helped make Elders Day such a special community gathering. ❤️

Did you know that the wreck of HMS 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 was discovered by Parks Canada in 2010?

While the final resting place of HMS 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 was unknown, a Parks Canada team of underwater archaeologists (UAT), utilized Inuvialuit oral histories to commence a search for the wreckage.

In July 2010, Parks Canada used a Zodiac boat and a side-scan radar to search the Arctic waters of Mercy Bay. They found the HMS 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 upright and relatively intact, minus its three masts.

Did you know, the wreck of HMS 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 lies just outside Aulavik National Park?

In 1850, HMS 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 was sent to search for the ill-fated Sir John Franklin Expedition (HMS 𝘌𝘳𝘦𝘣𝘶𝘴 and HMS 𝘛𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘳), which sought to map the Northwest Passage.

HMS 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 became trapped in the Arctic ice pack and became stuck at the West end of the Northwest Passage. They were frozen in place for three years before they abandoned ship in mid 1853.

For decades after its abandonment, Inuvialuit travelled to Mercy Bay to salvage materials from the ship's abandoned shoreline cache—resources that were incorporated into daily life and influenced travel routes throughout the region. Artifacts associated with HMS 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 have since been documented at sites across the western Arctic.

Two round trips will be available between Tuktuyaaktuuq and the Pingo Day Use Area.

Departure: Starting at 12:30 PM from Northmart, with stops at:

Revisiting HMS Investigator in 2026

In May 2026, Parks Canada returned to Mercy Bay to perform an updated archeological survey of HMS Investigator wreck, requested by the Aulavik National Park Management Board.

Using advanced technology, the team captured new images and insights into the site’s condition.

Working alongside partners, Parks Canada is advancing our understanding and stewardship of Canada's Arctic heritage while contributing to Canada's enduring presence in the North.
