Imagine Invermere

Imagine Invermere Imagine Invermere is our community sustainability plan. It's a long-term vision that helps guide our community toward a more sustainable future.

What kind of community would you like Invermere to be in 20 years? How can we get there together? What are the steps we can take right now? These questions were used to create Invermere’s Integrated Community Sustainability Plan, known as Imagine Invermere. The plan was adopted in 2011, and a committee was formed to help move it forward. This committee, called the Imagine Invermere Implementation

Team, has been working hard, and several exciting projects have been completed or are underway. For example, over the summer of 2013, the District partnered with Groundswell on a composting pilot project. Food waste, which normally would go to the landfill, was collected from local restaurants and composted at the Invermere works yard, producing an odor-free, chemical free compost product in a short time. The project was very successful, and may help to encourage a regional composting initiative. One of the Team’s goals is to develop partnerships within the community with engaged citizens and community groups who are inspired to work together on initiatives that create a sustainable future.

Growing the next generation of farmers and food lovers in Canada!

On November 6, Imagine Invermere hosted a gathering of community group leaders and volunteers to celebrate the partnerships we have formed. We called it a ‘Partner Event’, and we hope to make it a recurring annual event.

It was an informal evening, held in the family area of the Station Pub. Approximately 25 people attended, representing at least 8 community groups from Westside Park Community Association to the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce. Each group gave a brief presentation on the project they received funding for through Imagine Invermere, and answered questions from the room.

The participants enjoyed sharing their projects, and also hearing about other work in the community they may not have been aware of. The Imagine Invermere committee thanked everyone for their dedication and hard work. There was a general feeling of connection and inspiration at the end of the evening. Many people expressed the support for holding an event like this annually, with the thought that it could grow into something much bigger.

Many thanks to Theresa Wood for making the arrangements!

Cheers to these wonderful people, all working away to make our community a better place to live!
