Today we pause to remember and honour the life of Jordan River Anderson, a young boy from Norway House Cree Nation in Manitoba, born in 1999. Jordan was born with complex medical needs and spent more than two years in hospital not because it was medically necessary, but because the federal and provincial governments could not agree on who should pay for the supports he needed at home. While governments debated responsibility, Jordan waited.

That delay speaks to a much larger and painful reality: when governments argue over jurisdiction, First Nations children are too often left without the services they need.

Jordan passed away on February 2, 2005, at just five years old, never having the opportunity to live at home with his family.

Yet his life changed the lives of countless others. Jordan’s story led to the creation of Jordan’s Principle a child-first commitment to ensure First Nations children receive the care and supports they need, when they need them, without delay or dispute.

Today, we honour Jordan by continuing to stand up for his legacy and by advocating for the full and meaningful implementation of these principles. ❤️
