Some places are still truly wild.
Located outside of the High Arctic community of Pond Inlet, Sirmilik National Park is one of Canada’s most remote national parks. In some seasons, fewer than a dozen visitors set foot here, leaving it as pristine today as it has been for generations.

This summer, NorthWinds is excited to offer a guided hiking expedition into the Oliver Sound region of the park—an area that remains off the beaten path even by Sirmilik standards.

Stunning mountains, ancient glaciers, Arctic wildlife, and days spent exploring a landscape few people will ever experience await those willing to venture north.

Meet Kodiak - One of our 4 “Bears”
He’s from the first litter of our girl Goose and he looks a lot like his father Axel.

Him and his three other siblings are inseparable. On the team, Kodiak is focused and rarely gets distracted, unless instigated by his two brothers Panda and Karhu.

Like his sister Ursa, Kodiak is a big snuggle bear; he’s gentle and sweet and loves his belly rubs... This sweet boy will be a wonderful house husky when he retires.

The spring sun is reminding us that summer is just around the corner. We're looking forward to a summer of hiking, sea kayaking and camping.

This summer we’re excited to be offering a couple amazing hiking trips to both Auyuittuq National Park and to Sirmilik National Park.

Auyuittuq Thor Trek: July 20-26
Sirmilik Oliver Sound Hike: July 30 - August 10
Auyuittuq Traverse from Qikiqtarjuaq to Pang: August 14-24

Dog sledding season is still in full swing!

Navigating through the jumbled rough ice during a dogsled camping trip earlier this year was a fun adventure.

We wanna share some love for the incredible woman behind the Northwinds name and legacy. Matty McNair is one of the original founders and owners of NorthWinds… She also happens to be the mother of the current owner.

As a world renowned polar guide, explorer, teacher, author, artist, mentor… (the list goes on) this woman has built a legacy of resilience, courage, polar expertise and sheer grit. Simply put she is as tough and capable as they come.

Looking for a true “off the beaten path” summer adventure?

Sirmilik National Park has no marked trails or campsites—just wide open space and some seriously stunning scenery in a remote corner of the Arctic.

Remnants of massive glaciers still hang off the mountains and spill into the valleys below, shaping the landscape in a pretty incredible way. It’s a hidden gem—and we’re excited to be offering a new hike in Sirmilik this summer.

It’s no secret, tasty food is key to a fun expedition.

We use a variety of camping meals, but one of our favorites is NiriVik… made right here in Iqaluit by our very own guide Vik (). Sourcing local meats, she crafts together delicious flavors… arctic char bake, muskox chili, caribou sweet potato pie, and her newest, narwhal bourguignon.

Meet Echo
Echo and her sister Luna joined the Northwinds team as young pups and with consistent training and encouragement they eventually found their places in the pack. But undeniably her best friend is her daughter Waffle. The two are inseparable, always side by side. Together they create a tornado of total chaos.

To sum up Echo... she is a girl of love, snuggles and heaps of excitement... Even after a long run, she still has energy to spare. If you've had the joy of meeting this sweet one, tag us here and share some photos.
